A flicfloc is a little hand powered gizmo for turning whole oats into flaked or rolled oats.
I’ve had this little contraption for at least eight years and while I don’t use it every day, I do use it probably, on average, four times a week. I love oatmeal and on days Vince and I aren’t eating on the same schedule and I want a quick dinner, it’s often oats. Some days he wants breakfast earlier than I do so later in the morning, I’ll have a bowl of oats.
This little metal part did not make the move so I haven’t had oats in close to two months. I did buy a box of oats but they just aren’t anywhere near the same as fresh flaked oats.
As soon as I realized I didn’t have that part (and I fear it got taped to the bubble wrap that was protecting the flicfloc and thrown out with the bubble wrap), I started trying to order a new one.
Pleasant Hill Grain has been totally swamped with orders during the pandemic. I must have left three or four different messages for them, sent two emails, finally talked to someone who said he would have to check on the availability and someone would get back with me, which didn’t happen, last week I called and a human answered. I was so shocked I about hung up the phone but she was very nice, explained how unbelievable busy they have been; how they’ve hired more people and still can’t keep up. She thought they had one of these parts, would have to check on it and get back with me. Not very hopeful that I’d hear back from her soon, I was prepared to try to buy another flicfloc just to get the part but they are backordered and who knows when I would get that.
I was so very happy when she called me back within a few minutes to tell me they had one, it was $12. I ordered it and yesterday, it arrived.
The minute it arrived, I flaked some oats and fixed myself a bowl of oatmeal.
A bit of cream, a few raspberries and that was my dinner!
Slowly, we’re getting closer to “normal” around here. It will be a good while before we have everything here, everything unpacked and where it belongs but we’re making progress and I’m happy with that . . especially happy to have freshly rolled oats back on my menu!

It’s amazing that you did manage to get that one small part. Glad it arrived. My husband likes oatmeal for lunch especially when it’s really cold outside. I love the taste and smell of oatmeal in things but can’t handle it as cooked cereal. It’s a texture thing. But I use a lot of it in cooking and baking. I have always used oatmeal in my meatloaf and meatballs instead of bread.

That looks so yummy. My husband and I both love oatmeal. I ordered one of those gizmos through your blog but unfortunately it’s on back order. Hopefully more will arrive and I can try it for myself. Thanks for all the great ideas.

Things like that seem extraordinarily hard to get these days. Hope you get yours soon.

Where do you get your oats.? I usually steel cut oats.

I have been ordering from Pleasant Hill Grain – 26 pound tubs but Natural Grocery has them here in 1 pound bags for way less, probably because of shipping costs. Whole Foods should have them, health food stores probably have them. I eat steel cut oats too but I can do those in the wheat mill and adjust the setting to coarse.
