I can’t tell you how much I love the Farmers’ Market here. Besides getting to see Addie, the Farmers’ Market is one of the best things about this area. In the summer, it’s open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A month or so back, they stopped the Thursday market and within the last week or so they stopped the Tuesday market but the Saturday market goes throughout the year, winter and all. In spring, Tuesday and Thursday markets will open again. This market has been going for 21 years. I’ve never lived where we had a great farmers’ market but we surely do here.

The Free Kids Meal is Breakfast – Butternut Squash quick bread (think banana bread with fall flavors), fruit parfait, and white milk; AND Lunch – baked barbecue chicken, potato salad, cucumber slices, and chocolate milk. Every child, aged 1 through 18, gets a free breakfast and a free lunch, regardless of where they live or their income status.
Kids ages 1 – 18 can get a free breakfast AND a free lunch. I think that’s awesome. First, it’s a wholesome meal and second, they always have something unique. I think this morning they had sliced kohlrabi in the kids lunch or breakfast.
Vince asked me what I bought and I told him “all the things I always want and you don’t want to buy!”
I will pay more to buy directly from the farmer. I know Vince sees the value in doing that but he never wants to do it. I got 10 pounds of 90/10 ground beef and a pound of shrimp from a guy who raises shrimp in Neosho. Those are the two main things I always want to get and Vince says no!
As far as veggie type things, I got buttercrunch lettuce, two heads of cabbage for making kraut. The cabbage in the stores in Texas always seemed a bit dry and I had a hard time pounding juice out of it so it will be so nice to make kraut with homegrown, recently picked cabbage. I got three stalks of ginger. I’m going to use some for kimchi and I’m going to plant some in pots and keep it in the sun room through winter.
Also, there are black pearl mushrooms, microgreens, kale, and just so no one thinks I’m eating too much healthy food – two fried pies.
That’s my Farmers’ Market goodies for this week!

Lucky to have it open all year! The one here is only open mid April thru September. Those pies are healthy — they are fruit!
