Yesterday morning we were in the sewing room packing by 7 a.m. We worked really hard til about 11:30, went back to the house and fixed sandwiches. Sat and rested for a while, then went back to the sewing room about 1:30 and worked til maybe 3:30, stopped, fixed dinner, went back about 6 and worked til about 8:30. We’re making progress but we have so far to go.
Every day I say “Are you SURE we’re going to have enough packed for the first load by October 12?” Vince is calming and confident. Yesterday he said “I think we’re going to be ready before then and we’ll end up calling them to come early.” I do not believe that and I hope he’s not just saying it to make me calm down.
There’s just so much stuff.
Why do I have seven gallons of Mary Ellen’s Best Press, eight spray bottles of Niagra spray starch of some kind, and two cans of Magic Sizing. I must have been planning on doing LOTS of pressing.
We have four fabric shelves emptied and one to go. There’s also food storage in there and about half of that has been packed.
I did find some treasures. My sweet boy a LONG time ago!
I was never one to use fat quarters but I love these sets from Michael Miller. I think I’ll use the teal pack, in addition to other teal stash fabrics to make a quilt for Addie. Maybe! She had told me she wanted her room at my house to stay yellow but have teal accessories. Nicole told me last night that she said she wants to be an LSU cheerleader and wants to paint her room (at their house) purple and gold. I think I’ll make a quilt I like and put it in her room at our house because she changes her mind about things faster than I do.
The machines – sewing machines, sergers, coverstitch – everything except the longarm, have all been taken down and packed. Yesterday as I was hauling things out of the closet, I remembered my excitement of planning the new sewing room, and unpacking everything and putting it away. Somewhere along the way, I lost my excitement. Maybe that just happens to me every 8 to 10 years. I suppose 8 to 10 years from now, my moving days will be over so I hope we’re happy with our decisions.
It’s been fun finding things in the sewing room but I’m so ready to have it all packed up.

We are facing a move, but as we don’t have a date yet, it doesn’t make much sense to pack yet. However, I already find myself, eyeballing things I don’t want to move. We may need a dumpster,
Judy Laquidara says
We did get one of those really long dumpsters when we were packing to move here and you would think we had learned but just nine years later, we could definitely use one again.

My sewing room was one of the first to be packed when we moved to this house. But it was a small bedroom, so it wasn’t as big a job as it would be now that I have filled up a bigger space. Hope the rest of the packing goes well for you.
Judy Laquidara says
I am convinced that if I had a gymnasium, I would completely fill it up. Having to pack it all up has been a bit eye opening.

Thanks for the laugh. And me too.

I desperately need to clean out my house. (I may watched a few too many episodes of Extreme Hoarders, and that puts me in the mood to clean…) I re-arranged my yarn room last fall, but then a good friend passed away and I don’t want to think about how much yarn, spinning fiber, and fabric ended up at my house. One of the things I brought home were a couple of huge boxes of zippers. I’m sure there are more than a hundred, everything from 9-inch to 22-inch. Unfortunately they are are all metal, and heavy on 1970’s colors. (shades of orange and teal). I am hoping to go through and pull out a reasonable amount that I think I’ll use and share the rest with others…I need to be strong and remind myself that I don’t need to keep it all. I need to pretend I’m moving and sort stuff out with that in mind…

Wishing you well on your packing! When we cleared out my parents’ house there was so much stuff and my sisters and I hardly took anything. My older sister went home and started clearing out her stuff and I had that mindset too when I got home. We had been in our home for a year and getting everything moved here was the first time we had to do it ourselves and we were supposed to downsize (smaller house) but instead put lots of extra stuff in the basement. I started but then stalled. That was four years ago and now I have even more stuff. Something happens and you get used to having things everywhere and you don’t see it any more. Recently we had some work done which required us to spend more time downstairs where it’s cooler and I’m getting back in the mindset to take things to Goodwill.
Twyla says
You are way more energetic than me. I am trying to downsize. It is very hard to let go of treasures.(I have no junk, lol). The grandkids were going to help me with a yard sale. Yeah, right. Just do it and give them the money. So yesterday I remembered the Terrell State Hospital normally has a thrift store open once a month (not at this time). They do wonderful things for the employees and the newer items donated are put out in a room for the patients to choose from to give as gifts to family at Christmas. They accept shoe boxes they wrap in Christmas paper and give filled to patients. Soooo I am donating my treasures to them. .We are considering moving (well, I am) so my thoughts for moving my treasures of many fabrics and sewing items is to purchase an old travel trailer and make into a sewing room and then everything will just roll along with me in my cute travel trailer.. My thoughts not his.

Oh that teal and yellow, plus more teal and yellow would make a beautiful quilt. #youneedmoretealandyellowfabric

You could starch the heck out of just about anything! 🙂

I’m jealous of all that Niagara Spray, I can’t find it anywhere here now.

Me too! It’s my favorite.

i cringed when i read “we” are packing the sewing room. i would gladly give up the help not to hear “what is this for?” and “what are you making with this?” and “how long have you had this?”
one thing i learned tho was to spread it out in smaller boxes. i knew my stash of fabric in the linen closet was a lot, so i used the bighest box to pack it in so it would all be together. it was not appreciated by the guys who had to take that HEAVY box downstairs and load it onto the truck!
Judy Laquidara says
Every box we have is super heavy but the movers told us to pack them tight!
I’ll be singing a sad tale when I’m having to unpack all those boxes at the new location.
Elle says
You’re making great headway. I’d say a lot of sewing is in your future to use up all that best press. 😉 cuz you don’t want to waste it!
Carolyn says
Oh my, Chad looks so different without that majestic beard of his! What a cutie he was when he was little!
Cynthia says
Wouldn’t a memory quilt hanging with Chad’s pic, and pics of Nicole and Addie at the same age look lovely in Addie’s room?
Mary says
We know who to call if we can’t find Best Press!
Nelle Coursey says
If you find those cookie molds, put them in a place where you will know where they are and then write yourself a note as to where they are!! LOL
Donna in KS says
Tell us where you find them!!! I am so glad someone reminded us about those molds.
Judy Laquidara says
I’ve been through everything in both bedrooms and they aren’t there. I’ve been through about 75% of the sewing room and haven’t found them in there. It’s the craziest thing ever.
Kathy says
I’m so excited to have you say you’re going to make a quilt for Addie! I love your posts but I have really missed your quilting!
Linda in NE says
You shouldn’t run out of Best Press for a while!! The new house is exciting and all but I sure don’t envy you the packing job. And then there’s the unpacking & putting away on the other end.
