Vince is scaring me. Every time he walks through the Texas sewing room, he says “I don’t know where you’re going to put all this stuff! It isn’t going to fit in the sewing room in Missouri!”
I keep thinking it over and over in my head so yesterday, I had him grab the tape measure and we went over and measured the Texas sewing room.
Missouri Sewing Room:
The Missouri sewing room is 570 square feet. It has a closet – just a regular closet that’s probably 12 square feet so I’m going to say that total room is 582 square feet.
Texas Sewing Room:
The Texas sewing room, not counting a 3′ countertop/cabinets along one wall and the fridge and freezer in there, is 601 square feet. There are two additional closets. One is 8 x 8 but it has non-sewing related things stored in there. The other closet is 8 x 16. Half of that closet is used for non-sewing related things so I’ll add 64 square feet for that one, making that room a total of 665 square feet.
But . . in that room are the following things that will not be in the new sewing room:
- Desk – 9 square feet
- Table – 11 square feet
- Sofa – 19 square feet
- Work Bench – 12 square feet
- Recliner – 9 square feet
- Printer Stand – 6 square feet
- Food Storage – 20 square feet
- Ironing Table (Vince is going to cut it down – it’s too big) – 2 square feet
- Yarn Storage – 50 square feet
- Two Book Cases – 12 square feet
That’s 150 square feet of stuff in the TX room that won’t be in the MO room. Take that off and I had 515 square feet.
That makes the two rooms almost exactly the same except . . I will have the fabric racks in the sewing room. There will be four and each is 2.5′ x 6′ so that’s 60 square feet. That leaves me with 522 square feet for the new sewing room.
They’re almost identical in size! I would like to put a love seat or a nice chair in the sewing room and I haven’t figured that in there because if I’m short on space, I’ll not do it.
Things That Won’t Be In There:
- Desk – 9 square feet – It’s a heavy (very heavy) oak desk and it’s had a bit of water damage when the a/c sitting above it sprung a leak twice. I want a small computer table that will sit outside the downstairs family room.
- Table – 11 square feet – This is the breakfast table that will be in the breakfast room.
- Sofa – 19 square feet – This will be in the downstairs family room.
- Work Bench – 12 square feet – I bought this when I didn’t have room in the sewing room in Nevada, MO for my big cutting table. Vince is going to take it for his shop.
- Recliner – 9 square feet – Not making the move.
- Printer Stand – 6 square feet – This is actually a small entertainment center of sorts and we’ll use it upstairs.
- Food Storage – 20 square feet – I have a room for food storage.
- Ironing Table (Vince is going to cut it down – it’s too big) – 2 square feet
- Yarn Storage – 50 square feet – I think there will be room for the yarn in the food storage room. If not, I can use the basement bedroom closet and space in the room for yarn storage.
- Two Book Cases – 12 square feet – There’s a “foyer” kinda just outside the sewing room so I’m putting the book cases there.
After doing all the measuring and math, I feel much better about my space.

Vince doubts the determined resources of a woman/quilter/knitter? 😉 Silly Vince. Of course you’ll fit.
Happy packing!

Vince better watch out…when someone tells me something like that, I take it as a challenge. I have no doubts you will get it all in your new space! LOL

That was excellent follow-up to a potential problem. Good for you for investigating and measuring!!!

i love math! it has served me well with quilting, etc. not to add stress but the sq ft doesn’t always work because layout can have a affect too. like a window that is 4″ too low where your table is, or the door that can’t open all the way because the sewing machine top has to open to be useable . altho i haven’t moved often i take what i need, what i can’t live without, what i want, and what would be nice to have. once there, i’ve always found things to take to goodwill be i have options and surprises but never regrets. SO excited for you in this new phase of life!

Yes. That’s why I had drawn it all out on paper and shared that on here a month or so ago. Since it’s a basement room, the windows are high enough that except for two of them, they don’t interfere with placement of items. There are two regular size windows and I wanted my sewing machines facing those so I worked around that.
In my current room, I have four doors – two that lead to the outside and two that lead to big closets, plus, along the 18′ wall, I have cabinets and countertop, a fridge and freezer so I lose another 3′ or so because I have to leave room to walk in front of those.
There’s a double wide pocket door that I won’t need to use (because there’s another door just a few steps away) but I think they put that there so they could open up both rooms together when they wanted to. I’ll put my design wall in front of the double doors and it won’t be attached to the wall so I can slide it behind the fabric shelves if we want to open those doors.
I think the new room will be much easier to work with than the current room.

One of many things to figure out, but it sounds to me as if it’s going to be fine.

It will be fine; it will be fun! When will these men learn not to give us this kind of a challenge. We’re use to working around problems/situations. After all, we’ve lived with them a day or two….and we’ve raised children! I am just about as happy about this move as you are; so happy for you !!
