This morning I was awake but Vince was still sleeping so I stayed in bed and was reading. I heard a lawn mower. It must have awakened Vince because was beginning to stir.
Me: Who’s the crazy person cutting wet grass before 6:30 in the morning?
Vince: I’m not sure that’s a lawn mower. It’s too early.
Me: I think it’s our grass being cut!
Vince: NO! They don’t come this early.
I got out of bed, looked and yes . . it’s our grass.
I’m not real happy about it and I’m betting our neighbors may be less happy to be awakened so early by a lawn mower.
We always thought you should let the dew dry before cutting the grass but . . I’m not a professional lawn service so what do I know . . except that cutting grass before 6:30 is probably going to wake someone up!

0800 at the earliest! Holy cow that’s not good. I swear, my neighbor waits till I get in the hot tub and then within 30 seconds fires his lawnmower up. 🙁
I hope the rest of your Wednesday is fantastic!

I talked to a professional landscaper at a party and found out that the new pro mowers are so powerful that they pull the grass upright before they cut it, so it doesn’t matter if the grass is wet. For those of us using home mowers we still need to wait for the grass to dry.
That is crazy early! Now that I work from home I noticed a the landscape crew coming at 7:00 AM every Thursday morning at a neighbor’s house, and I thought that was early!
Judy Laquidara says
They do but one of his mowers isn’t a big professional mower. There are places he can’t get with the big mower so he does the big mower, then goes back with a smaller mower.

I feel guilty using power tools outside before 9:00 am on Saturdays! Of course all of my immediate neighbors are the type to be up early, but I still feel guilty. I do understand trying to beat the heat on mowing this time of year, although before 6:30 is waaaaayyyyyy too early in my book. Is it even light enough at 6:30? 🙂
Judy Laquidara says
It’s just not THAT hot here and he’s on a big, fast riding mower. It was barely light!

I am so not a morning person. I’d be expressing my displeasure with the company manager. Even my husband knows better than to disturb my beauty sleep. lol

I keep saying our world is short on common sense. This is just another prime example.
Judy Laquidara says
The first time he cut the grass when we were here, it was about 5 p.m.; the second time it was around 1 p.m. and now . . 6:20 a.m. We had panned to leave yesterday and I’m guessing Vince told him that and he thought we weren’t going to be here. I have no idea. He usually has two or three guys working and today it was just him so, maybe for some reason, he had to get an early start to get all his Wednesday yards done. I have no idea.

I remember your previous issues with “red tag” issues when you lived in MO. You may need to check if the city has any noise rules and when work can start in the morning. If so, let the mowing crew know about it.
I’ve noticed that roofers will wait until 8 am to start hammering, but they work until dark.
Judy Laquidara says
We’re not in the city. We’re in the county and even the red tag guy doesn’t have jurisdiction in the county.

LOL…I always mow at 6:30 or earlier if it’s light enough to see and I often comment to DH that I am so glad we don’t have neighbors because I wouldn’t want to cause any grumbling. But around here, mowing at 6:30 is just common sense when the temps are over 100 during the day and 6:30 is the coolest part of the day. I’ll mow for 2 hours. I’ve have a push mower and after 2 hours, I’m pooped.
P.S. I wouldn’t mow that early if I had neighbors…but I’d want to. 😉
Judy Laquidara says
I already had one neighbor across the road say “What’s up with mowing at 6 a.m.?” Wasn’t me mowing!! And there’s a guy behind us who works evenings/nights and gets in about 2 a.m. so I’m guessing he wasn’t too happy.
Sue Edberg says
Because of the heat here in Phoenix, we have all types of landscape services and construction companies starting projects about 6 a.m. It drives me crazy because I am not a morning person, but during the summer the regulations state this can be done. I think that 7 is the earliest in the winter.
Nelle Coursey says
That is way too early for mowing. I would request he not do this any more. No matter if it is good for the grass or not. It does not make for good neighbors, especially since you are new to the area. I sleep until 9 most days. There are some where I wake up and get up earlier but some people just do not like it when others do this. I hope they understand you did not ask them to do this at that hour and he disturbed your sleep as well!
Christi says
It’s hot so I understand cutting early. Funny my neighbor cuts at 8 or 9 at night. That’s OK for most but in the old days when I had to be at work at 3AM I would not have been happy. You can’t please everyone.
Twyla says
My peeve at the neighbors is smoking their leaves in the fall. Leaves do not burn they smoke due to lack of oxygen. We all live in the country on 2 1/2 acres covered in trees. So the neighbor to south smokes when wind blows from the south and the neighbor to the north smokes her leaves when north wind blows. Intentional? I hope to think not BUT it always works out this way. One year she left a fire going one night. Another neighbor who worked night shift in Dallas woke me up about midnight beating on the door, “Twyla, the woods behind your house are on fire!!!”. Somewhat like people evacuating the hurricane I am trying to wake up decide on what needs to be done and gathered to get out. Move husband’s pickup, my car out of the way for fire trucks to come thru our back yard to get to her property. What needs to go? I have always put my keys in my purse when I get home and my purse in my bedroom just in case of an emergency. Why can’t they compost? OMGosh!! I could mail them info on how to compost!! Thanks, glad we talked this out, lol.
Laura Haynes says
Maybe he wanted to get it done before any rain from storm Laura soaked the ground?
Judy Laquidara says
No rain from Laura in that area.
