Shopping for furniture and decorating just isn’t my cup of tea. If the people who had this house would have left all the furniture and everything on the walls, I would have been happy and would never have changed anything.
In fact, they were over the other night and we were sitting at the table. The lady was facing the wall and she said “You know . . I feel bad that I took that plate rack because I can see on the wall where it was for 17 years . . do you want it?” I said “Sure!” so they brought it over and Vince hung it back up. He said “We need to get plates that are meaningful to us . . maybe something from Louisiana, Georgia, Kentucky and Texas. I told him that I thought it was more that the colors match the decor vs. having something meaningful. Would a Mardi Gras plate, a Georgia peach plate, a Kentucky Derby plate and a Texas Lone Star plate look better? Probably not but we’ll see. My guess is that the plates that are there will be there forever.
As far as picking out furniture, I’d about go in with my eyes closed and pick something. That’s how much I detest doing it. The big, horribly heavy sofa that we keep moving around is probably 28 years old. I think Chad was about 3 when I bought it after he cut all the flowers out of my previous sofa. Vince thinks we keep moving it because I love it but I may have just figured out that we keep moving it because of my dislike of choosing new furniture.
It’s a loveseat and a recliner. There’s another recliner ordered but who knows how long it will be before it gets here. The furniture store people said “hopefully before Christmas”.
I always prefer a loveseat because my feeling is . . you sleep in the bed and you sit on the sofa but the folks in my life seem to think it’s ok to nap on the sofa or fall asleep watching TV and sleep there. We won’t have a TV on the main level so that won’t be an issue but having a loveseat means no one wants to stretch out and sleep on it.
This is actually the sofa fabric and pillow. It’s hard to see the color with the sun coming through so brightly.
The funny thing is I wasn’t even thinking about the loveseat being so close to the dining room but it all accidentally really matches quite well.
There’s just enough red/greenish and brown to go with the curtains and rug in there.
I can’t wait to get the breakfast room table here and put the dining room table in the dining room.
I think all we have left to buy as far as furniture goes is something to go under the TV in the basement (it’s mounted on the wall) and we need something with shelves and doors to put the equipment on and get it out of sight. We also need something in the main level family room, probably a corner shelf of some kind, to put the stereo equipment on and we need a few chairs for the sun room. Otherwise, we’re done, I think.
It made it so nice that we bought three bedrooms of furniture, the dining room table/chairs and the downstairs recliners from the sellers. We brought the loveseat from the apartment and I think that will end up in the sewing room once we get the big sofa in the downstairs family room. At least I think that’s how things are going to work out.

Short people (like me) can sleep/nap on a love seat. LOL My first sofa was a love seat, because I had a small apartment. I didn’t have a guest room, so when my parents came to visit, I gave them my bed, and I slept on the love seat. I am glad I don’t have to do that any more, though. 🙂

We can all do a lot of things when we have to but even though I’m short, a loveseat wouldn’t be my first choice but given that or the floor, I’d take it. 🙂

I love choosing furniture and decorating. Wish I was there to help you. I could even make you enjoy it. I’ll bet you already do have some interesting things you could use on the walls or tables to decorate with.

I have things for the walls that may work. I never hung anything on the walls in Texas but heck, we’ve only been there 9 years! 🙂 Once I get it here, I’ll figure something out . . or not. You come, I’ll give you the credit card and you go have fun but leave me home. I don’t like any kind of shopping.

A few days ago I thought I wanted a new Lazy Boy recliner so went to look. I was so disappointed in the workmanship and I came home and realized my three old Lazy Boy recliner was the better deal. Best of luck.

The ones we got seem great! I think the ones in our house in Texas are about 7 years old, the one in the sewing room is probably 12 years old and I can’t tell any difference in what we got yesterday and them. Vince is pretty picky about what he buys and he looked it over good – sat in it, reclined, checked out the mechanisms and we’re happy with it.

I’m with you! Hate shopping anyway and furniture? Ugh! We were married 17y before we had a bedroom set (mattress on frame and hand-me-over dresser from older sister). We got an Ethan Allen Cherry set and it will outlive us 🙂 40y married and on just our 3rd family room setup which should last at least 10 more years. Oak square table is 30y+……. Dining room is antique Mahogany inherited from Dad 25+y ago (Mom hated it).
We’ve needed new flooring for several years. I don’t want to go choose it so here we are. I’d love to show up one day to find someone did it!
I just don’t care. Now the walls? Love what we have. Every piece is either made by me (quilt, cross stitch), or a handmade gift or a piece I purchased directly from the artist. It is all valuable art to me.
Happy Tuesday!

I don’t really enjoy shopping for furniture either. But we bought a large sectional sofa for our family room because we wanted to have seating for at least 6 adults. Both daughters have very tall husbands, and we wanted everyone to be able to sit down. My love seat is actually out in the living room and makes for a nice small space for curling up with a book – alone. Ironically my husband wanted a recliner again, so we bought one last winter. He tried out LOTS of them at the store until he found one he liked. Now he hates that chair and has decided it’s not comfortable. I always did hate it because it’s too big for me – I’m very short. So I’m with you on the furniture shopping. Yuck!!

Since you are on good terms with the sellers of your home and they live relatively close, can you reveal why they moved? To be closer to family, or to a smaller home, or one story home, or just for a change?
One of the other blogs I read found their “dream home” and moved. But, since the buyer loved how they decorated their home, he asked to buy the majority of the stuff. Their attitude was that the “stuff” was purchased for that home and may or may not fit in the new home. So, they have been renovating and buying furniture for a much larger home!
Would you consider hanging any of your quilts on the walls? Or make a wall hanging with blocks representing the places you have lived. You would be able to control the color scheme that way!

Yes, I can reveal it because I doubt they see my blog and I doubt they care if I share it. They found an amazing house less than a mile from this one, on a creek (that’s more like a river). It has 3 acres, huge windows and they can watch eagles soar! I would have bought it too. That’s exactly what happened here. They said they would sell some of their furniture. I was interested in the dining table – SOLID oak with two leaves and 8 chairs and their bedroom furniture. They didn’t really want to sell either but then decided their new home had so much dark wood, and this home has all oak, they decided to sell those rooms I wanted.
If I could have picked between this house and their new house, I would have picked this one. The new one had more of an open kitchen and I like my kitchen separate from every room so I can listen to my music, talk to myself and make huge messes. Their new home is larger than this one and this is as large as we need.
I doubt I’d make a quilt. I have a lot of things to hang on the wall so I don’t see a wall hanging in my future but you never know.

I love the way your love seat and recliner match the curtains so well! I noticed that right off. Very good choice! Love them!!
