Yesterday was crazy busy.
The Plumber:
First off, the plumber came. He was a super nice guy and Vince liked him a lot. He left and Vince said “That guy is smart! I’m so glad we found him.” Vince had called probably four plumbers before someone recommended the guy who came yesterday. One recently had surgery and couldn’t work; one couldn’t get here this week; one had a number that had been disconnected so it all worked out for the best.
There was nothing wrong – just some things Vince wanted to change so the plumber did all that, looked at how to add a gas line for the stove. It won’t be cheap because the pipe/hose is expensive but it won’t be hard.
The Windows:
There were two slightly cracked windows in the sun room so the seller had ordered three new windows so they would match. Apparently, when the window people came out to measure, they measured the windows about 1/4″ too small so the fit isn’t perfect. There are no air leaks but you an see the black rubber stuff at the top of them. Not sure if we’re going to keep them or have them remade and change them again. So, that wasn’t a positive repair job.
Tree Trimmer:
A tree guy came just before dusk. The Bradford pears have to go and he’ll grind down the stumps. We’ll eventually plant something else there (both sides of the driveway but not now). The Capital pears by the deck will get a major trimming but will eventually be taken out. There’s a pin oak by the side property line that needs a lot of work but it can be saved. There are several trees that need trimming and “skirting” so he’ll come back in a couple of weeks and do all that.
Furniture Delivery:
It was after 6:30 p.m. before the furniture was delivered. At some point in the afternoon, our internet stopped working and without internet, we have no cell service and I was afraid they had tried to call, we didn’t answer and they cancelled the delivery but that didn’t happen. How do we pick places with no cell service? Are there just that many places or we have a knack or finding them?
I love the furniture! I don’t know how we thought we could make it without furniture on the main level. I’ll make a furniture post separately.
The Fridge:
About 6 p.m. Vince was getting water out of the fridge door and when he moved his cup, the thing kept pouring water so now the fridge is sitting in the middle of the kitchen and Vince is going to get a part for it this morning.
The Locks:
They never came! We ordered them two weeks ago. The lady said they’d be here by Friday (which was the 21st). We had planned to go home on the 19th but decided to stay to get the new locks on. They still aren’t here. The lady was supposed to call and get shipping info when they didn’t come on the 21st. She didn’t. Vince called Monday (yesterday) and they still didn’t come in. He said “We can’t just stay here and wait indefinitely!” I said “I don’t see why not!” but he didn’t agree. We do have to get back to Texas and get busy if we’re ever going to get moved in here.
So, he ended up calling back and talking to a manager who found out that the locks haven’t even shipped yet and it may be 10 more days before they ship so this morning he’s going to a different place where they have locks in stock and will re-key as many as we need so they all use the same key.
We’re getting things done . . slowly, but we’re happy with our pace.

Just curious – what was/is wrong with the trees?

Bradford pears are not good trees to start with. They split and break and cause damage. The two at the end of our driveway . . one split just before closing but it’s way too big. So, we’re taking both of those out. If you aren’t familiar with Bradford pears, they’re pretty much a nuisance tree in areas with wind. The two trees near the deck are Capital pears which are about as bad as Bradford pears. If (I should say when) they break, they will damage the house and the deck. The pin oak has a lot of dead limbs and we’re going to try to save it. The river birch trees need to be trimmed. One is leaning over the solar panels and needs to be trimmed way back or cut completely.

Sounds like things will work out ok for you in the end. I know I would rather have the new locks in before I left. I think that is a good thing for you to do. Chad and Nicole can check on things for you. But I think it will not be long before you are back in MO. Safe travels to you!
