I’m just a tad over 5’2″ and lately, I’ve been feeling very short!
The Bed:
The mattress set I had at the apartment had only been slept on three nights. The master bedroom set in the Texas house . . bad! The set that was on the master bedroom bed got taken to the dump and we moved the set from the extra room into there. We’ve known for a while that we needed new mattresses but also knew we’d be moving and hoped we could make it without buying mattresses to have to move. We’ve made it! But, I could not wait to sleep on that new mattress Monday night. It was the same mattress set I had bought when we first moved to Nevada, MO but after almost 15 years, that set has seen better days. It is the set that we’re using in Texas though.
Vince likes a softer mattress but I like firm. The new set is extra firm and I realized he was tossing and turning all night so I asked him yesterday morning if he wanted to go to Sam’s and get some kind of topper. YES!
With just the mattress and box springs, it was tall. Add a 4″ topper and it all comes up to my waist. I told Vince I needed to bring in the step ladder and dive into bed. The couple we bought the house from . . you already know we bought some of their furniture and the bedroom furniture was one of the things we bought. They loved it but it just didn’t work in their new house and I think they’re still sad about selling it. I sent him a message last night and said “We may need to borrow a saw.” He wrote back and said “What kind of saw?” and I said “We’re going to have to saw the legs of the bed because it’s too tall.”
This conversation followed.
He didn’t believe for a moment that we were going to saw on that bed!
It’s all ok . . it’s super comfy now. Vince was happy with it and I’m still happy with it. There’s not much more important than getting a good night’s sleep.

I’ve thought about buying a topper; do you have a link to the one you bought and like? Wondering if my sheets would still fit. Thanks.

I’ll do a blog post with pictures.

I too had a bed that was very high – it was great for my 6 foot husband but at 5′ 1″ it was a struggle. Sometime after he passed a friend in my knitting group told us how she got rid of her tall box springs and ordered a “bunky” box springs for her bed. What is a bunky box springs you might ask? It is the height of a box springs used for bunk beds but made the size you need – twin, double, queen, king. I ordered one from our local family owned furniture store in queen size – think it is about 3″ high. It is great and no need for steps anymore.

There is a half size (half height) box spring that does the same thing as a full size one. We have slept on one for years.

Vince might not be happy buying another box spring at this point in time. But my question is,,,,,,,,, is that a couple of bolts of fabric in the dogs bed?
Deborah Rhodes says
Wondered about that too!!!
Judy Laquidara says
Yes. I have tried to block the sides so she can’t jump out during the night. She’s only done it once (a couple of weeks ago in Texas – onto hardwood floor). At least here, there’s carpet. I did bring about 10 bolts of fabric. Don’t ask me why (because I don’t know) but they have come in handy.

We love a slat bed…no box springs just a series of slats fastened together with a good mattress on top. We had one first in New Zealand. We had to order one in SC and put it together ourselves. A good bed makes life easier.

a slat bed with no box springs works well we got rid of our box springs years ago and just have the mattress it works well. Vince is handy he could make that for you, with very little trouble I am sure. Other wise what about using the stairs near the end of the bed and climbing up that way. Then crawling up your bed. What a lovely picture that brings to mind. 🙂

I would never have thought you were only 5′ 2″ tall–in your photos you don’t look short!

I thought that too!!
