Wednesday Addie saw the praying mantis for the first time and she was so intrigued by how it used its arms. She stood outside and watched it for probably half an hour.
Yesterday evening, she was walking back up to the house and I heard her yell “GRANNY! Come see this weird bug!”
You might remember this picture from last year when she found the skins, brought them inside and had them all on their dining room barn wood wall. That was actually posted on July 4 so it was almost exactly a year ago.
I went out to see what kind of bug she had found. Around here, you never know what it might be. I told her it was a cicada and explained that it was leaving the old shell and it would be like all the shells she found on trees at her house. She sat and watched it a while but it was a slow process so she lost interest.
After a while, she went back out and found this.
It’s always fun to watch that happen. She went back out a few times later to check on it and it was still there but it’s gone this morning. Off to do whatever they do with the rest of their life . . probably eat my garden!

Let’s hope that is not the case!!

She’s learning a lot about nature at your house. Great homeschooling! LOL

Locusts and cicadas are different. You don’t have to worry about cicadas eating your garden. Addie would probably enjoy looking them up online and learning about them.
