This is embarrassing but . . just keeping it real.
A while back, I ordered a new serger and had never even opened the box it came in. Sewing the doll clothes, I really needed the serger. Briefly, I looked down at the old serger that has been sitting on the table since I gave up trying to get it to work.
That’s a Bernina serger that I bought probably in 1990. It’s had a lot of use and a bit of abuse. I thought about taking it apart and trying to figure out what’s wrong with it and said NO! I’m going to open the box with the new serger, figure out how to thread it and use it.
That’s the biggest way I feel my age – not willing to try new things as readily as I once would.
I opened the box, figured out how to thread it and am happy to be using it!
Crazy that it was purchased in July, 2017 so it’s been sitting here for three years not being used.

Ummm, I bought my serger in November, 2017 and while I took it out of the box after a year, it’s still unused and untried, so you’re not alone! It’s even the same make and model as yours. Although I’m a homebody, I work full-time and I volunteer and had an active social life, so when I had time to sew I didn’t always want a challenging task.
Now that I’m staying home I’m looking forward to learning the new serger once the snow falls and the gardening season is over.

What fun! I’m glad it’s open and you are now set to use it. You might see if the high school machine shop would like the old Bernina to practice repairs.

It is so nice to have a back up of things. I don’t even have a serger, probably would not even know how to use one! LOL

Once you get it threaded, it’s easy to use. I don’t do well with written directions so I almost had to get Vince to come thread it but it’s done and hopefully I’ll never have to re-thread it from scratch again.

Got you beat, years ago while visiting my son and his family I was going to help fix a chair cushion. I said how much easier the job would be with a sewing machine. My daughter in law said “I have one”,. After laughing and saying sure you did she promptly produced a brand new nevet opened Kenmore. This was when they were all steel, excellent machines. It was ten years old to the month. When I could speak I asked when she got it and she said she got it to make baby clothes for our first grandson 10 years earlier. Cushion fixed, machine runs like a top still . Grandson and machine are both 23 years old.

Now that is a funny story. Does your DIL sew now?
Susan says
My problem is my serger is 38 yrs old and is showing it’s age. But I spent a lot on it when new and now to replace it to get something of the same quality is really out of my price range. 🙁 So I’m hoping the repair shop can keep it running. I think I’ve only kept a new sewing machine in the box for at most a day.

There’s a Mennonite (maybe) shop in MO that worked on my Bernina 1230 so I saved my old Bernina serger and will take it to them some day. For now, the Brother serger is doing what I need it to to do. Definitely not a Bernina but for doll clothes and the few clothing articles I make, it will be fine. It’s hard to buy other brands after having Berninas for so long but I couldn’t justify that cost these days.
