I had a pile of hand knitted socks that needed washing. Usually, I wash them in my big bread dough container but I didn’t think I had that many so I put them in the bathroom sink, then remembered I had some in the little metal trash can in my bathroom that I use for a dirty sock bin.
If I had known there were going to be that many, I would have used the bigger bucket.
I love this little hanging gizmo. I have two of them but one is in MO. I’ll probably need to either bring that back here or get another one for her since I always have more than 8 pairs of socks to wash. Or, I guess I could wash sock more often!
The extras are on a towel in the small bathroom drying. There were three more pairs that were mixed in with other dirty clothes so I washed those too and I think that makes 17 pairs of socks that got washed today.
I mostly wear my socks twice before washing. This time of year, I wear flip flops a lot or my garden boots and I don’t wear the hand knitted socks in the garden boots so it may well be late Fall before I need to wash 17 pairs of knitted sock again.

I am working on my first pair of socks, toe up. Any suggestion for how long to make the cuffs? I usually prefer crew length, but don’t know if it makes any difference with the hand knitting. Also, I’ve seen some pix of sock forms to put into the socks for drying. Do you ever use them? Thanks!

First consideration is the yarn. Do you have enough to make them as long as you want. If you’re doing them two at a time, by the time you get to the cuff, you should have a good idea how much yarn you have left. Otherwise – suit yourself. Make them however long you want them. Wear those for a while, see how you like them and adjust the next pair accordingly. Good luck with it all.

I’m doing my socks one-at-a-time. The first one is on an older pair of needles with about 1.5 – 2″ of cuff in ribbing. I’m a little beyond that now on the second sock. It is all from one skein of yarn. I am knitting the first one with yarn from the outside of the skein, and the second one from yarn from the inside of the skein. Being my first time, I’m not sure how much of this sock yarn (good quality) I’ll need. And – I don’t yet know if there will be a second pair, LOL! Have to see how they feel! Thanks for your feedback. (Have been following you since the quilt project for the tornado victims.)

So glad you told me about this pattern and different yarns years ago. I wear my knitted socks every winter and love them. I’m back reading daily but don’t always comment. Paula in KY

I actually wear mine in the summer too if I’m wearing socks and jeans. I find them so much more comfy than most storebought socks.
Thanks for reading all these years! 🙂
