Yesterday when I was talking to Addie . .
Me: Addie! We have three mama chicken sitting on eggs. Do you know what that means?
Addie: No, what?
Me: Do you know where baby chicks come from?
I could tell she was thinking . . the store . . but she probably knew that wasn’t right. At the same time, I was thinking . . this might not be a conversation I should be having with her, especially on the phone!
I explained that the baby chicks are inside the egg and they’ll peck on the eggs from the inside and let themselves out. I asked her if she would love to see that and she was pretty excited about it but I think she didn’t really believe me.
I then talked to Nicole and said . . I kinda started this conversation without thinking about it and you might have to clean up the mess I’ve made. I suggested she find a youtube video and watch it with Addie. Great, Granny . . now maybe while she has the chicken and eggs on her mind, she’ll ask about real babies . . where do they come from?
I kinda always knew where baby chicks came from because my grandma had chickens but can you imagine children Addie’s age who have been eating eggs all their life and suddenly they realize those cute little baby chicks just came out of that same kind of egg?

Well, don’t ask her where steaks or pork chops come from, okay? Or her favorite piece of chicken! LOL

Chad fixed prime rib one night years ago and since then, Addie calls steak and prime rib “that good cow meat!” She helps Chad when he’s butchering deer, skinning squirrels or cleaning fish so she pretty much knows where her food comes from but the thought of a baby chicken in that scrambled egg . . that was a surprise.

You might go to Kevin The Quilter’s blog. Right now his chicken, Mother Maybelle, is sitting on 7 eggs. They started hatching either yesterday or Sunday. He is filming a very short segment on her every other day or so. There have been maybe half a dozen posts in the last couple weeks. This small town Iowa girl has learned a few things about chickens.
