Things must be getting better or else the grocery store hired more workers because I placed our second online grocery order yesterday and we’ll be able to pick it up today.
Our first order was placed on March 26 but wasn’t available for pickup til April 2. In that first order, I got just a few things – six things I think.
The milk expired on April 13 so I’ll use that to make ricotta this afternoon. There’s about half a gallon left. I think we were both afraid to use it but it will be nice to have fresh ricotta.
My order last night was a bit longer. I ordered, and hope I get it all, the following:
- Tomatoes – 3 pounds
- Bananas – 2 pounds
- Milk – 2
- Whipping Cream – 2 quarts
- Sharp Cheddar
- Mild Cheddar
- Velveeta (I’m making Mac & Cheese this week)
- Cabbage
- Mushrooms
- Green Curry Sauce (I’m making Spicy Thai Cabbage Soup)
- Oranges
- Onions
- Blueberries
- Lemons
- Avocados
- Prosiutto
- Celery
- Ginger Root
- Cilantro
- Limes
- Jalapeno Peppers
With the homemade mustard and the bread I’ve been baking, I’ve been wanting sandwich meat, which I’ll probably be sorry we bought but I also got packaged sliced ham and roast beef for sandwich meat.
Notice there’s no ice cream but I was tempted! With all the talk of a possible meat shortage, I kinda felt like I should have ordered chicken or roasts or steaks but Vince said he’d rather pick that out himself. Not happening.
Most everything is fresh and not pantry items. I know we couldn’t do it long term but it would be pretty nice if we could go on for a very long time buying just this little bit of stuff every two weeks. I know this also isn’t going to happen but I was thinking . . what if I made a menu for a month and just had the same thing over and over every month. I could have one grocery order for the first two weeks of the month and the second grocery order the last two weeks of the month and just keep ordering the same thing every time . . I think I like to try new recipes too much for that to work but it does sound like something to think about.
I guess that’s not a bad grocery order considering it’s been over two weeks since I made an order and that one was only about $40.

I like your idea of monthly menu planning. My husband complains if we have certain dishes too often/close together. Maybe it would help if I could point to the menu, and say “see? we haven’t had this in 26 days”. All in good fun of course.

When I was teaching and had 3 little kids at home, I had a 6 week rotating menu. I kept it in a notebook. Each page had the menu for the week, any recipes needed, and the grocery list. I could give my husband the page to go to the store with any other household things needed added to the bottom. It worked really well. I also made extras and kept them in the freezer. Six weeks worked well without anyone getting bored and if we wanted something special everyone in a while I just substituted.

How do you make ricotta cheese? Can you share a tried and true recipe or how about a blog on it? Maybe you have and I missed it. When did you do it?

Our Walmart is full for pickup slots for the next 7 days, they wont even let you make an appointment. I actually went in the store to shop and found them to be well stocked- got everything I was looking for except frozen stir fry veggies. Stopped at the local meat market and they were also well stocked but were running low on some cuts of chicken. So a successful trip to town but hope not to have to go back for several weeks

When our kids were in school (elementary – high school), we would all sit down once a month to plan meals. I made a calendar page on notebook paper and we filled out what we wanted to eat every day. Used that to make our shopping list for things we didn’t have in the refrigerator, freezer, pantry. When I cooked, whatever leftovers we had for that meal was made into tv dinners and put in the freezer. About every 10 days was a tv dinner night and everyone got to pick what they wanted to eat from the freezer. It worked out really well, mostly before high school – seemed like there were too many school activities to accommodate everyone’s schedule, but, we tried.
With just two of us, I just make “whatever”, we’ll eat it a couple of times during the week and the rest goes in the freezer.

You COULD do your idea if your recipes were made from things that are in a lot of recipes. Then you could change things around, if you felt like it. I don’t see Vince going for that when he doesn’t have to, though! Without the temptation of being there, you would probably spend a lot less on groceries.
