It’s been just two weeks since we cut the elderberries back and I took all the cuttings and tried to root them. Some of the smaller stems I put in plastic bags with sphagnum and the woody stems, I just poked down in buckets.
There were ten little buckets of dirt with woody stems.
Every single one of them has sprouted new growth.
I wish we had planted more! Our elderberry orchard is going to go fro 14 trees to 24 trees. So far, they seem pretty easy to grow, easy to root and produce well. They do need a lot of water but seem to be fairly bug resistant.
Maybe we’ve found the perfect tree for growing here!

I think that is awesome. I just picked up some blackberry starts (thornless) cause I’m allergic to the thorns and they seem to be doing pretty good. Enjoy your garden!!!

Wow, that sounds like a great tree for me – I do not have a green thumb. LOL

Live and learn…I always pictured elderberries growing on bushes, like other berries! I hope these new ones thrive…amazing that you found something that works so well. It’s kind of like the succulents around here; you can just drop a leaf or bit of stem on the ground, and those little things will take root and grow!
