Diary of the Wife of a Retired Husband

I’ma night owl who has learned to live fairly harmoniously with a morning guy. We go to bed at the same time . . usually after Vince saying “let’s go to bed!” at least five or six times and I’m saying “let me finish one more row”, “let me finish this email”, “let me pass through the kitchen and be sure everything is done in there”.

He’s always asleep hours before I am but he’s fine with me reading in bed so that’s what I do most nights. I very quietly read my book and don’t bother him.

He has not learned to wake up early and quietly exit the bedroom!

Last week, one morning he looked at one of our accounts after I had gone back to sleep and from the living room, he screamed “JUDY! Our account has a zero balance!” That got me out of bed. It was a problem on their end and apparently lots of people woke up to the same thing. But, there was no going back to sleep after that.

Yesterday morning, I don’t think it was even daylight, when he said “JUDY! Look at this!” I didn’t have my glasses on so I said “I can’t see. What does it say?” I’m thinking . . if may be your obituary if you wake me up this early again! He said “The stock market is down over 700.” There’s absolutely nothing I can do about that so why the heck did I need to be awakened with that news?

Last night before we went to bed, I said “I don’t care what happens in the world – stock market can be zero; our account can be zero . . do NOT wake me up!”

He said “Third time’s the charm.”

I told him . . you’re going to see charming if you wake me up early. I guess there was nothing earth shattering because he didn’t wake me up.

You make me think of my parents! My father was an early riser, and my mother was not. She always said it wouldn’t be so bad if only my father wouldn’t feel the need to turn on all the lights in the house! Having all the lights on always woke her up.

We do the same thing, I don’t sleep well so i read while he sleeps. But…when we moved we put his dresser and clothes in the second bedroom. That way when he gets up early he can go into his “dressing room” and turn on lights, get dressed and get out the door without waking me up. Although most mornings I do wake up to kiss him goodbye! ๐Ÿ™‚ So now we talk about “his room” and “my room”!

haha – this made me laugh! Hubby leaves very early for work most days and I work from home. Although I’m typically out of bed by 6:15, I have finally requested that he not ‘kiss me goodbye’ unless it is after 5:45. LOL That extra half hour of beauty sleep is very necessary for my sanity!

Similar patterns at our house. I am a RN and was working 12 hour shifts and went to bed really tired and needed to be back at work at 7 the next day. Before I went to bed I told my husband not to wake me up, no matter what. He woke up during the night with what turned out to be a gallbladder attack. He didn’t wake me up, as directed. He drove himself to the ER. I didn’t wake up until my alarm went off and he’s missing and his car is gone, no note, no message. I was worried, confused, and anxious. I went to work and the supervisor told me ” Your husband’s in the ER but he wouldn’t let us call you, he said you told him not to wake you up, no matter what.”
I still hear about that. You may want to consider a small disclaimer. But your story made us laugh.

Yep .. I understand… His family motto was up and at em early, then you get more done in your day. So his family was always up at 5 am to have breakfast and start the day. Ummm… does the afternoon nap count as getting stuff done? That is what they always did and he felt the need to continue it into our old age. Ummm NO .. Just because your family did it doesn’t mean we are going to and I told him that when we got married. So he gets up and unloads the dishwasher, starts laundry, folds laundry, walks the dog and then with all the commotion going on I am up early.. One day this habit will quit.. one day.. Naps are included in our daily regime and like it or not one day he will sleep in … maybe …. hahahahahahahaha
