Last night Vince and I were sitting . . he was doing something and I was knitting. It was dark . . about 7:30. I asked Vince when was the last time he had changed the time the chicken door closes. It had been a while. I went out to check on them and the door was closed with about a dozen chickens perched on the stairs going into the coop. A few of them were inside but most were locked outside.
I came back to the house, got Vince because I had no idea how to manually open the door. He went out and opened the door but they wouldn’t go in. Their routine was interrupted and they were going to sit right there on the ramp to the door and there was no changing that. They’ve probably been doing that for at least a week!
He had to hold the flashlight while I grabbed them . . one a time, and carried them around to the walk in door. If I tried to just shove them through the chicken door, they made so much noise and were flapping their wings and dust from the coop was going everywhere so it was easier to carry them one by one to the walk through door.
I had to come back in, take a shower, wash my hair, wash the jacket I had on. This morning Vince reset the timers on both coops. You’d think we could remember to do that. We initially tried the electronic eye that would close at a certain time but we never had great results with that so we’re using a timer but it is dependent on the humans doing their job! 🙂
I need to set reminders for myself to adjust the opening/closing times based on sunrise/sunset!

Good thing you went and checked! Have they been staying out all night for a week?
Judy Laquidara says
Probably! But I counted them this morning and they’re all there.

And then comes the daylight savings time change!!! Always something, isn’t it?!??
Judy Laquidara says
Ughh! I had forgotten about that.
Joyce says
If the door is open, do they generally go in when it gets dark out?
Judy Laquidara says
Yes.
