Aging Dog

We’ve Been in the South Too Long

Yesterday the vet was talking about Rita’s age and we aren’t sure. We began trying to piece together when she came here and how long we’ve had her. All I remembered was that I had been to town, came home home and there was a chihuahua hanging out around the smoker looking for food. She ran when I drove up. There’s a curve way down our driveway and she ran as far as the curve, then stopped and looked back at me. I guess she figured she could outrun the old granny from that spot. I put food out, called to her but she wouldn’t come to me.

When Vince got home, I told him there had been a chihuahua outside but he wouldn’t come close to me. A few days later, I left for MO and then Vince saw her. He tried to get her to come to him but she wouldn’t. He put food out for her and she would eat it when he wasn’t around, or when she didn’t think he was watching. He finally used a Have A Heart trap and caught her. She growled at him a couple of times because she was just so afraid. She had on a cute little collar so he was able to hook the leash onto the collar without having to grab her. That was in October, 2014 so she’s been here going on 5-1/2 years. The rest is history . .

Here she is when she first came here.

Here’s a picture of her from yesterday.

Yesterday Vince looked at me and said “There’s something wrong with me! Think about this . . I had to use a trap to catch a dog that has and continues to cost me thousands and thousands of dollars!” That was about the only time either of us laughed yesterday.

She’s a lucky pooch. You’ve given her lots of love and security, a great life.

What a lucky dog! One of our best dogs over the years was a poor lost stray. My husband came home from work and there was a big Lassie type dog standing in the gate to the house yard. He turned out to be a gem – a sweet gentle older dog.

I understand! My dog has cost me a fortune in vet bills because of his health problems, but he’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. He was 10 weeks old then. He’s now 13 years old, sees his internal medicine specialist vet every 3 months, and is on prescription meds.

Rita is so lucky she “found” you. I’m now struggling with our Star a border collie mix she’s 12. She’s been on thyroid meds for a few years. She’s been losing weight not eating and breathing heavy at times. Vet took xrays yesterday and said she has lung cancer – probably started somewhere else and spread. Gave us Prednisone to see if that helps her quality of life. Afraid the inevitable is ……. Hug Rita for me.

So worth every dollar. Can’t put a price on love.

You both have kind hearts. Rita found her way to your house for a reason. God knew she needed you as much as you would need her!

She’s been a great dog for you, too. Vince can be so funny. How come he’s not writing any more on here?
