Are you tired of hearing about our mattress woes? We’re almost to the end of this saga.
Now that we actually have the money in our account, I’ll share the story about the refund on the mattress set. Recap: We bought a Serta iComfort set from Sam’s Club in 2011. For about a year, we’ve been having issues with it and probably half the nights, one of us would get up and go to the other bed. A couple of months ago, we decided the Serta mattress had to go. We generally don’t keep our mattresses, especially the one we sleep on every night, more than 8 or 10 years so we didn’t mind getting rid of it and getting another one but we checked the warranty on it and it seems as though it had a 25 year warranty based on the tag that was on it but no one wold confirm that. When Vince contacted them, it took a few attempts to get it all settled up. They no longer make that version so they told Vince they’d refund the purchase price to his credit card. They did! 100% of the purchase price was refunded. No questions asked. No one wanted to examine the bed. Kinda weird but . . thankful! So, kudos to Serta and Sam’s Club who handled the warranty.
The other bed is a Restonic we bought in probably 2008. I’ve always thought that was an amazing mattress but we’ve never slept on it much because it was in the guest room. Everyone who has slept on it loved it. When Chad and Nicole got ready for a new mattress set, they went to the furniture store in MO where I bought it and wanted one just like it but that exact mattress is no longer made. When I bought the set for the apartment, I bought the current version of the same set.
I think I’ve mentioned on here that once Vince and I stayed at a B&B in New York and the bed was amazing. The lady told me that she had a foam topper on it and a feather/down topper on top of the foam topper so I came home and created that same setup on the Restonic set. At some point, the down topper ended up on Chad’s bed and I put an egg crate type foam topper on top of about a 2″ foam topper on the Restonic bed.
Once we got rid of the Serta set, we still have a double bed in the third bedroom that’s probably been slept on less than a dozen nights so, instead of buying a new mattress for our room, we brought the Restonic set into the master bedroom. We don’t have a Restonic dealer here and it would be about $300 to get the mattress/box springs delivered here and we’re not doing that.
About a week ago, we wrestled the box springs and the mattress into our room, moved the foam toppers and Vince said “they’re all yellow” and I said “they’re old”.
We slept on the bed the first couple of nights and it was torture. Wherever Vince was sleeping, I’d end up right there. I couldn’t stay on my own side of the bed. It seemed lie it was so “mushy”.
We decided that mattress was just too old. We researched – spent hours and hours reading reviews and even subscribed to Consumer Reports so we could read their mattress findings and recommendations. We could not decide what we want. Our choices are basically – buy what we can get locally or buy a bed in a box and we didn’t want one of those. We’re not buying a super expensive mattress. We know we’re going to move at least once more. We sometimes end up with a dog in the bed. We’ve managed to get good sleep with average priced mattresses and we’ll figure out how to do it again.
Yesterday as I was changing the sheets on the bed, I crawled into the middle of the bed to straighten something and I realized – it’s the foam! The foam was never on the Serta, it’s only been on the Restonic and any time either of us slept on that bed, it was just one person so we didn’t notice how the foam caved in.
I called Vince in and showed it to him. He said “nothing lasts forever!” so we pulled all that off. We slept without the foam last night on the Restonic and there was no sagging, no migrating toward where Vince was sleeping. He thinks the Restonic is too hard. Addie thinks the new mattress at the apartment is rock hard. I ordered a 2″ cooling foam topper for here and if we like it, I’ll go ahead and order one for the bed there.
I hope this is the end of the mattress story til we get to the next location and buy two need mattress set ups.

Let me know what you think about your new cooling foam topper. We purchased one to replace our original foam topper and I couldn’t move in the bed!!! It was cold wherever you moved your foot, your leg, your arm or anything!! It sounded like a great idea, but it sure wasn’t a good idea for me! We purchased another regular foam topper and I cut down the cooling foam to put on the futon that lives in our spare room. I put fleece sheets on top of it, so if I need to sleep there (usually when one of us is sick, I go there) the cooling foam is not so cold because of the fleece sheets. We laugh about it often!!! We just love our bed, it’s so comfy. (I don’t remember what brand)

Impressed with the customer service you got on the warranty. Was it Sam’s Club who did the actual refund? Please let us know what cooling pad you got and how you like it!

I think the last one we bought was from Southwest. It is a good one, or it has been.

I think it’s time for me to get new foam. I seem to wind up in the same dip every night. LOL

We need a new mattress very badly, but I’m putting it off for now. A friend swears by her sleep number bed, and even though I just hate to pay those prices, I may wind up buying one of those eventually. My husband likes a firm bed, and I just can’t sleep on a hard mattress. I’m like the princess and the pea. I feel bruised! I want a softer bed. When he’s in a soft bed he complains of a back-ache. So we may just have to bite the bullet and spend extra to both get what we need. I can get a very good deal through a factory direct plan we bought into, so it’s not terrible – I’m just stingy and I hope to move within the year, and it seems like it would be easier to incorporate that purchase into the move. So for now we’ll just have to tough it out….

We bought the Sleep Number adjustable base combo a year ago. It was ridiculously expensive, but so worth it.

We have an I comfort as well and are not happy with it .. The foam is just memoried up .. in other words its holding its last shape even tho we have turned it every 30 days like we were told to. The air bed we had for years and the bladder gave up so we bought another one and the foam that separates the 2 air bladders caved in.
So we are looking for a new mattress and cooling pad . Inquiring minds want to know what you get ..
