Yarn Arrival

There was a yarn arrival. I still feel fine about my yarn buying plans this year. I’ve always said I’d buy yarn when I really, really want yarn but it’s the willy nilly . . I’m bored so I’ll shop . . type buying I have to stop.

I mentioned when I got the last The Knitter magazine that there was a sweater, Green Lane, that caught my eye. They used Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift, which is a fingering weight yarn, 100% Shetland wool. It’s 115 yards per 25 gram ball, or, 230 yards per 50 gram ball.

Jamieson’s in the UK does not ship to the U. S. but does have a couple of U. S. distributors. It’s also a very similar yarn to Harrisville’s Shetland yarn. It’s also 100% Shetland, it’s 217 yards per 50 gram ball so it’s very comparable to the yarn used in the sample, but the main reason I preferred this yarn is that it’s available from Eat, Sleep, Knit. There are some yarn shops that, while I’m not complaining about their customer service, it can be anywhere from 10 days to two weeks from the time I place the order til I receive the order. There’s rarely a time when I place an order with ESK that it isn’t shipped that same day . . within a few hours, and it almost always comes priority mail so I have it within three to four days.

Obviously I’m never sitting around without yarn that I could use but on a project that has colorwork, I could start working on the project and decide one of the colors isn’t exactly what I want and end up ordering a different color; or I could run short and have to order more. So, my preference is to order from ESK when possible.

Also, I was one of the customers begging for the more wooly wools – the Shetland type wool, so I want to use those wools they’ve started stocking.

These colors are very similar to the yarns used in the sample for the sweater I want to make. I almost went with a pink/purple color scheme but, in the end, knew I’d probably wear the greens/blues more.

When I first knew I wanted to order yarn for that sweater, I had planned to wait til closer to time to start it before ordering but as I was planning yarn I wanted to use, and using their color picker (for planning), I noticed several of the colors I was auditioning were either out of stock or low in stock so when I got to the option I liked best and all the colors were in stock, I placed the order.
