I really do want your answers and if you think about it and change your mind, please come back and answer again.
There are no right or wrong answers and I specifically want to hear from non-knitters, as well as knitters.
Before I ask my questions, I want to share my thoughts when I was quilting. When I was going to make a gift for someone . . a quilt, of course, in my early quilting years, I would try to find out as much as I could about the recipient and their decor/preferences. What size bed? Favorite colors? Would they prefer a lap quilt, a bed quilt? Would they want a flatter, warmer batting such as Warm & Natural or a lighter, fluffier batting like Hobbs Heirloom.
Later I decided that my preference was to give them something I loved. Something that would forever remind them of me and my appreciation for their friendship or what they had done that resulted in a quilt for a gift.
People change their decor so if their bedroom was gray and I made a gray quilt, then 10 years from now, when their bedroom is brown, will they toss the gray quilt or stick it in a closet and never see it. If I knew someone didn’t like orange, I’d not use orange but other than that, I didn’t worry a whole lot about what the recipient might want when I was making a quilt.
With knitted gifts, I find it a bit different because most anything I make for someone is to be worn, not folded and left on the back of a chair, or used as a covering when you’re taking a nap at home.
I have a couple of projects I want to make for people I hardly know but they’ve done nice things for me and I have spent way too much time today trying to think about what to make.
Question #1:
What should I make? Hat, Cowl, Fingerless Mitts? I could make a shawl but some people might not want to wear a shawl? I figure most anyone has a time when they could wear a hat, a cowl or fingerless mitts. Actually a cowl is the thing that probably would be easiest because it doesn’t need to fit at all but I think I can guess as to hat/mitt size.
Question #2:
What color should I make? I figure a solid color is the easiest to wear. Solid purple would be easier to wear than purple, green and pink. But should I make it neutral – tan, gray, black? I’m thinking it should be a pretty color but maybe not something as wild as the Mac & Cheese or Lime Green.
Question #3:
If you could ask a knitting friend to make you anything you’ve ever seen . . probably NOT a sweater . . what would you ask for and what color would it be?
That’s not a trick question because neither recipient reads the blog.
Question #4:
Is there a knitted item I’ve made – again, no sweater please – that you’ve seen that I made in the past that you thought . . WOW, I’d LOVE to have one of those?
That question is just kinda to give me an idea of what other people like – really probably has nothing to do with the current dilemma about what to knit for these two ladies.
Thank you for your help. Now I can get back to finishing the shawl I should have spent more time working on today.
Barb Mikrut says
I would do a cowl in a berry red color.
Something I would like for someone to knit for me is a longer lace cowl in a variegated yarn.
Kathy S says
I am a non knitter. I love to see the braided cowls with the three buttons on them. Neutral colors like oatmeal or light grey or cream would go with more things that I wear. I’m not sure about what others wear.
Cindi says
Gray or navy cowl would be nice. One other consideration, do they wear wool?
Judy Laquidara says
If they don’t wear wool, then they’ll have a gift to give to someone for next Christmas. 🙂
Pat Peele says
I like cowls or scrafs in pastels or other solid colors or variegated yarns as I wear lots of neutral solid colors. I don’t wear many hats(messes up hair). I have friends who wear hats all the time. School colors are good. Go, Clemson Tigers! Are you and Vince sitting on opposite sides of the living room on Monday?
Judy Laquidara says
We’ll both be Clemson fans on Monday but I will be happy either way.
Phyllis says
I will have to be an LSU fan. My grandson is a freshman tuba player for them. He has had such a fantastic year this year.
Sharon McCurdy says
I would want a hat or scarf. From you, really socks! But those take too long. I probably would never wear a cowl. I would go with neutral colors. Orange and green tend to be colors people either love or hate. I don’t knit. I started following you when you were quilting. But, I still love your blog.
Debbie says
Just a quilter here but I do like those cowls. They would be a lovely gift. Simple (I think) but effective.
Carol says
Ok, as a novice knitter and knowing that I don’t know you well enough and you don’t know me at all, to be on your gift list, I would say a scarf.
Personally, I don’t wear hats (ESPECIALLY those tight-fitting, bobble topped ones that cause massive hat hair), and cowels would likely make me claustrophobic (I avoid high necks on sweaters, for example because they feel like they choke me). As for fingerless mitts, where we live that is an absolute absurdity! Gloves or mittens I would wear, but fingerless mitts? I simply can’t see the usefulness and I prefer avoiding frostbite!
But scarves work for all seasons, can be dressed up (Lacey, silky) or made casual (sturdier, warm, cables, ) etc. and as for colors, avoid neon unless you really know the person in a neon-type person…I love darks myself, in all colors but purple… and they are fast and easy to make, IMO
Kim Webb says
I would suggest a neutral color if you don’t really know the persons personal preference. I personally can’t stand wearing hats, scarfs and gloves and every year some one will give these things to me. I can’t think of anything I would want myself so my suggestion is that if you are going to make the effort to make something special for someone, maybe find out what they would like first.
Dorothy Moore says
I like scarfs. I live in N. GA and I would like to have a scarf I could wear in the early spring. Light weight yarn, lacy scarf design in light colored spring colors. I could wear it with a jacket on those cool spring days/nights or in church or going out eat. Great ideas from your followers.
Kim Webb says
I just read Carols comment and had to laugh as she said what I was thinking just better. Cowels remind me of glorified strangulation devices and the hat comment was dead on.
melfunk says
I like the idea of socks. WE all wear socks and no matter where you live, you need a warm pair at some point. I would go with something neutral, but I think of blue as a neutral too. I’ve always been excited to see your socks finished. I do live scarves, but living in TX, that doesn’t mean I get to use them often. I rarely wear a hat in TX, but colder weather that would work too. I still thing (after I verbalized on the keyboard) that a pair of socks would be wonderful.
Lisa G Boyer says
I would love scarves and fingerless mitts (because you don’t have to worry about hand size as much). I LOVE fingerless mitts because they keep my fingers free. Gloves are a pain and the fingers are always too short or long and you have to take them off frantically to answer a cell phone call. I’m with Carol–I don’t like cowls at all because I am a busty person and that just increases my upper landscape to where I really can’t see where I’m walking. I detest knitted hats, but my sister loves them. And I’ve made two shawls for myself and one for my mother and neither of us ever wear them because they are too fiddly. Scarves are good because even if you don’t like wool against your skin, you can wear them away from your neck or under your coat lapel. I would say about the color that it definitely depends on the person you’re making it for–I don’t think you should confine yourself to making neutral scarf because that would be boring for you to knit! Personalize the scarf–masculine or feminine, team colors, frequently worn colors, neutrals for the low key dresser, etc. I personally like brightly colored accent scarves in beautiful patterns–cables, lace. They set off my neutral sweaters and coats so nicely! Seasonal scarves are great! As far as what would I want that you’ve made–sweaters. I LOVE all your sweaters. But I know that’s too much work for a gift that you don’t know their size or preferences.
marcie says
Quilter and knitter.
1. hat or shawl (decorative or warm depending on where the giftee lives). Would never wear a cowl or fingerless mittens.
2. neutral colors unless you know what the person likes or looks good in; I think gray has marvelous possibilities
3. shawl for warmth
4. a shawl that is either lacy or warm; yep, I live in the north (great lakes region)
Terri says
As a non knitter here is my opinion. Rarely do I wear hats, they smash my hair or electrify it. Cowles no way, but…a pretty scarf yes. Now if I were asking for something it would be fingerless gloves. In a beautiful variegated berry color maybe? Any color would be fine really, with gloves I don’t worry about matching what I am wearing them with it is about warmth only.
PS I rarely wear sweaters anyway I stress over keeping their shape.
Dottie says
I’ve tried to decide how to answer the question(s). I’m probably making it a lot harder than it needs to be, LOL. I suppose (if I was making something for someone) I would probably make a scarf or a cowl and it would be in a neutral color (unless I knew the person(s) like bright colors) like oatmeal, grey, or black.
Sue Edberg says
I primarily quilt with a little knitting and/or crochet on the side. I would say I would prefer a scarf or shawl. I was going to make myself a cowl and even went as far as to purchase the yarn for it. Then I said I would never wear it as I would feel that I am being strangled – everything is still sitting in the bag. I don’t like things up against my neck. Living in the Phoenix area, I have very few occasions where I would need a scarf but I have used them under my coat on cold winter mornings or evenings to keep my neck/chest warm. I like shawls because every building I go into I freeze- everyone keeps their temps so cool that I always have either a sweater or a nice shawl with me. I prefer a nice dark black, gray or neutral color that goes with almost anything I would wear. I would suggest you keep whatever you make fairly generic in color as to go with whatever color the recipient likes.
Sandie says
In my world, Cranberry Red is a neutral, so that would be one of my top color suggestions (Gray, Nagy, oatmeal would be the other top contenders) if making any kind of outerwear. If I were to choose something other than a sweater that you’ve made, for you to make for me, it would be a pair of heavily cabled socks, or the Stained Glass cowl you’re still in the process of making.
Rhonda Russell says
As a non-knitter who has a knitting friend, I asked for her to knit me a pattern we found in the store that just covered my shoulders–kind of like a skinny cowl because I usually run hot and can’t wear sweaters–in a neutral variegated yarn. While I love it, I never wear it because even that little bit of “sweater” makes me too hot. She then knitted me a scarf that complemented my coat and I absolutely love it! It is a gold color with the “spiky” yarn. A cowl is something else that I would wear (in fact I still miss the purchased one I lost) but I wouldn’t want it in a bright color as I tend more to neutral tones. I never wear a hat as they make me too hot and cause static in my hair–I do wear my scarf wrapped around my head and neck similar to the way Islamic women wrap their hair. In fact, I was once gifted a hat because the giver felt I should wear a hat–it sits in a drawer. I would to take into consideration what the receiver currently wears as to whether to gift her anything knitted as knitted gifts make you warmer and not everyone needs nor wants that. Also, in regards to color, if the receiver normally wears bright colors, than use bright colors; but if he/she normally wears neutrals or muted colors, then try to match what they normally wear.
Helen B says
I absolutely love fingerless gloves! I’ve been boggled by what to make for some people who signed up for a Pay It Forward event I’ve decided to do. I am struggling as to what to make them, not a knitter here, but a quilter/seamstress.
Again, the fingerless gloves, in my opinion would be a fabulous gift. In a bright and cheery color would be even better—I love bold colors.
Anne says
Knitter and quilter
1. cowl
2. springy colors since spring is on it’s way. Maybe a nice fade.
3. A shawl in teal and orange! I live in Arizona and a shawl would work for winter.
4. Seriously? One of your beautiful lacy shawls, or a pair of your awesome socks!! 🙂
Nelle Coursey says
If you don’t know for sure what colors the person likes, then a neutral color would be good. I think you can’t go wrong with those. You can wear those with anything. Whereas if you do a color, then they would have to pair it up with something to match. As far as what to knit, I would think you could look at what they wear and judge from that. If they wear a lot of scarves and cowls, then that would be good. But mitts or a hat would be great if you don’t know which they would like/need. But I would say whether it is a quilt, cowl, hat or mitts, if it is from you, they should cherish it forever! I think when someone takes the time to make something for you, whatever it may be, I would cherish it and remember that friend forever. I would anyway, but to have something to touch that you made would be awesome!

Sewist,quilter,and crocheter-Non Knitter…
1. Hat
2. Neutral any color but green
3. Lacy shawl longer -something for fall nights any color but green
4. Socks
Donna says
To me a lacy shawl or socks would be a great gift to receive. Shawl in nice neutral colors and socks in either neutral or jeansy color. Something with would cables would be extra nice. I don’t knit so hand knitted item are so special. I’m not a fan of cowls, turtlenecks, etc. and hats make me feel like I’m closed up in a box. I think you are a wonderful knitter so I’m sure anything you do will be appreciated.
Sara Fridley says
Socks or a shawl would be my choice. I live in a cold climate but would never wear a cowl because I don’t like things around my neck. But I see so many beautiful cowls and people do love them. So for most recipients a cowl would be a great choice.
Emma says
Quilter here (and younger, don’t know the age range for your intended recipients but I’m mid-30s):
Question #1: To be honest I’m not sure what a cowl is/is for and would have to look it up (I think it’s like an infinity scarf?). I have long hair so a hat isn’t super useful for me unless it has a hole I can put a ponytail through, I mostly wear warm headband/earbands. I don’t have fingerless mitts but those would also be super useful.
Question #2: Neutrals, but not strict neutrals. I’d say classic colors…so yes black/gray/tan but also navy blue, olive green, or a berry/wine color will go with a LOT of stuff.
Question #3: A hat with a ponytail hole (my hair is almost down to my backside, so I really can’t fit it into any hats), fingerless mitts, or nice thick socks.
Question #4: A lot of your sweaters are really pretty (especially the ones with colorwork). I think it looks really classy, so whatever you do for your friends would look good with that mixed in (plus it should mean you can use leftover bits of yarn, which is good for using up stuff you’ve already got!).
Mary Jo says
A scarf. Never a shawl; I remember them from the 1970s so they seem out of date.
pattilynn9 says
Anything but a cowl. I don’t like anything around my neck. What I’d really like is another pair of those warm bootie/short socks in about 2 sizes too large that I could wear in bed at night. Not too tight and no seams on the bottom…yeah, I once had a pr that had seams on the bottom. Couldn’t walk in them.
For a gift for someone, I’d say blue is a popular color. If the person has gray hair, I’d avoid giving a gray hat/scarf/cowl…anything that would be close to the face I’d pick a color other than gray.

Non Knitter here
Personally, I do not like cowls and would never wear one. I, like many other women, have a short neck and the cowls are uncomfortable (and feel like a choke collar) I would LOVE a knitted scarf in a great red or ivory or black because those would go with all my coats. What I really love is knitted socks!
Laura Hood says
My thoughts run toward the scarf, in the infinity style. They’re easy to use and can worn closer to the neck for warmth if needed.
Lorraine says
Color! But maybe not Mac and Cheese or Lime Green! 🙂 And my preference would be a scarf. I was trying to think of a household item to knit….other than a pillow…drawing a blank. I am confident you will land on just the right idea!
quiltpaintcreate says
I don’t knit and I’d ask for socks. All the things you mentioned in #2 would go straight to Goodwill. I don’t wear any of those things. I’d go with color too. A lot of people don’t wear black. I never wear tan or gray – they make me look sick.
KatieQ says
I love to look at the cowls you knit, but I would personally never wear one. I received a beautiful hand knit cowl, but it makes me feel like I’m being strangled. Fingerless mitts are useless to me. I do love shawls and have a collection that I wear all of the time. Light weight shawls are great to take along in case air conditioning is too high or you need some seasonal extra warmth. They also dress up an outfit. I like scarves too, especially if they are a little wider. Oatmeal, grey, and black are colors almost anyone can use.
Christine says
IMO cowls are more of a fashion accessory rather than to keep warm. For that I’d say a scarf or hat. Neutral colors, unless the person is really into a sports team. What do I want that you’ve knitted? Socks or a cowl. In wild, bright colors.
Rosalie says
I’m not a knitter. My first thought was a scarf – to contrast or match my winter coat (you probably have seen her coat). But I also love the idea of socks – I have never had handknitted socks and would love to have some – in funky bright colors snd stripes that don’t match.
Jeanne says
The gift you made for your granddaughters teacher was beautiful and a perfect gift! I thought i would love one of those when you posted the pictures!! I think colors that you like make wonderful gifts!!
Katherine says
Scarf or socks. I’m not quite sure what a cowl is. Would never wear a shawl. I would look at how someone dresses – what types of colors – to choose a color for a gift. My MIL really likes crimson/cranberry type color so I try to get things for her in that color. Unfortunately she sometimes gets me stuff in that color – which looks awful on me, so I never wear it.
Danielle Nabozny says
1. I would vote for a cowl or mitt. Both are useful but so pretty.
2. Honestly I think a variegated would go with more colors than a solid. But probably more successful tale variegated, not crayon box ones. Maybe neutrals (shades of tans or Grey’s), or a black and white…or even shades of one color. Otherwise you have to decide on whether or not the person likes/wears pastels or jewels…
3. & 4. I really can’t answer because my a sewers would be sweaters! Maybe a lace shawl….a full blown shawl not a Charlotte.
Elle says
These are actually hard questions so I understand why you’re asking. I’m a knitter (and quilter) so I know the work going into anything.
I know a lot of people who won’t wear hats. And many who won’t wear scarves/cowls, and most people don’t know about fingerless gloves. (Maybe I just know a lot of weird people? and I live in snow country).
So, my thinking is a nice scarf long enough to double up. It can be worn for warmth or draped over a jacket as an accessory. Colors? Hmmm, a variegated neutral? grey/black/white, brown/tan/taupe? Unless you’ve seen these people wearing a coat so you’d know the color?
Vicky in Bama says
I can knit but haven’t for years so I consider myself a non-knitter. I would go with a cowl in a neutral color that would go with anything.
Laura Deaver says
A cowl in a deep jewel tone or fingerless mitts would be my choice. Either one would be a unique gift , especially to a non-knitter like me.
Susan Nixon says
1. Make socks. Everyone loves socks because everyone gets cold feet at sometime during the year.
2. The color won’t matter. Either it will go with something, or they will wear them in boots or no one ever sees them anyway.
3. I would ask for socks or a shawl in the softest possible yarn – not pink or orange, and otherwise, who cares?
4. I’ve thought that about almost everything you’ve ever made. Not fingerless mitts. Those are pointless to my cold hands. LOL I’m indifferent with cowls or scarves. Otherwise, I always like what you make. Actually, I like THOSE things, too, just wouldn’t partcularly want them for me.
There ya go, right down the line. Honestly, people would like anything you make, I expect. You have good taste. Neutral colors are always acceptable. Heathery colors are better than absolute solids, I think, but you know opinions don’t mean a lot. =)
Teri says
I think cowl, scarf or socks…neutral, grays, blue, unless you know what colors they wear…and socks…could be something wild and crazy….
Sherry in NC says
I’m a non-knitter and if someone were making me a gift, I would love bright, colorful socks in soft yarn. Also a pair of fingerless mitts would be really nice. Those would probably be better in a nice neutral beige, gray or black or maybe a variegated blue denim-like yard. I only wear a hat long enough to walk the dog and don’t like any thing close to my neck so a cowl would be out. I could handle a soft scart, though. I really like the patterns with Celtic style cables. But I would be happy with anything. It’s the thought that counts.
The one thing that I wish someone would make for me is kind of a hood scart, sort of like something you imagine when you think of Robin Hood. I have a pattern but since I don’t knit it will never get made. It would take me a long time to learn to knit that well. And besides, I can’t afford the yarn, needles, cable, etc. I need to support my learning to quilt habit.
Mary says
Cowl
Color – look at the person. What colors do they wear?
Choose a color – not beige, brown, gray. I’d rather get a color such as blue or green. I’d like it or love it or pass it on to someone who would.
If a knitter asked me what they could make for me, I’d choose a sweater. I know you don’t want that answer. I’ve seen simple sweaters that you seem to knit pretty quickly. Maybe one without buttons.
I’d pay to have a good knitter make me a sweater.

Give the person a coupon good for mitts, a cowl, a scarf, or ? Then you know they’ll want it!
Diana says
Definitely not a cowl, feel like I’m being strangled! A lacy scarf or fingerless mitts or socks would be a great gift, any colour but orange.
Joan says
Non knitter but love seeing what you do. I am one of the long time subscribes as I am a quilter. I do have knitted scarf that a friend made for me and love it. Must admit not enough to learn to do a knitted one, grin.
I can do basic knitting but it just never became something I enjoyed doing. Love the look though.
Chris B says
Quilter here. You might want to consider body type for your gift. For example, I’m a generously proportioned woman with a short neck. As a consequence, cowls make me look like a big balloon! I love scarves that I can drape more attractively. Or lighter weight shawls that can be scarves or shawls.
Ranch Wife says
You probably don’t need any more input, but I’m chiming in anyway. 😉
1 & 2 I think you should make something you would enjoy making. When I receive a gift, especially a handmade gift, I treasure it because I probably treasure the person who made it. It would bring me joy to wear it because I would think of that person every time I wore it. For example: I have never worn fingerless gloves or a cowl, but if you made either of those for me, I would wear them and it would make my heart happy. If you really want to know about colors, I think most folks wear denim (or maybe that’s just the case in my world) so colors that look good with denim would be a good choice.
3 & 4 I love scarves and socks…scrappy ones! And I think everything you make is just so pretty, but your colorwork projects really make me swoon.
Sibyl says
Have been pondering this since you posted it–then read your note about responses—I would not wear a cowl even if it was a loose one—looks so hot, same with a hat/cap, just don’t wear one–have had one for years and might have worn it once–just not cold enough here, as for those fingerless mitts, again never gets cold enough–like last night was in mid 30s but today will get up in the 60s or 70s, so really wouldn’t use it. I would love a shawl if I were to get something—also wouldn’t wool be quite warm? I do not have many knitted things, and socks are useless to me, as I wear tights or pantyhose mostly year round. I have looked at what others in my circle of friends and acquaintances and rarely see any of them wearing knitted items either. Wonder if it is more popular in areas that are cooler—yes I know ya’ll get hot as heck up there–but also get quite a bit colder than here in Houston.
As far as if I were to receive a gift, I would always appreciate something someone would make for me—haven’t received a handmade gift since my mother n love left us 25 years ago. And if you want colors—purples and pinks are always a favorite around my house with the girls here.
Teri says
A hat or a scarf in a color to match my coat or a neutral color. I love everything you’ve shown really, so would be happy with whatever you gifted me.
Andrea says
I live in MO, and while it does get cold here I run warm. The only time I wear a hat and scarf is when I’m shoveling snow. Normally I’m not out in the temps for long enough periods to justify them. My wardrobe is casual, so if it’s chilly I will put on a sweatshirt rather than add a shawl. I know some people wear scarves and cowls as accessories, but they are too warm for me to wear all of the time.
If I were to ask for a knitted gift I would request socks or full mittens. I’m only interested in fingerless mittens if they have a flap that comes over the fingertips for full coverage. If that’s not possible I don’t wear the fingerless style. My fingers are the first (and often only) part of me that get chilly, so I need something that covers them. Color-wise I prefer something either variegated or multi color. Solid is too plain unless there is stitch work that you want highlighted. I choose socks based on what color I feel like wearing and don’t bother matching them to my other clothing.
Off the top of my head I can’t think of a particular item that you’ve made that I could choose over another since I like them for different reasons. Some of your shawls I like because of the shape and some because of the pattern. I like the lacework, but I also like some of the more sold pieces if they have an interesting shape or color work.

Liz says
Late response here – while I like the look of looser cowls, I’m in the well-endowed category so additional bulk is not welcomed. The scarves that I use the most are narrow (4-6 in.) and shorter (40-50 in). Just enough to wrap around the neck and tuck into the jacket. And once inside, easy to stash in the pocket. My sister made me several and they are very pretty with cables and other decorative stitches.
I don’t wear that many sweaters that have to be pulled over the head – harder to take off when you get too warm. I do like longer lacy sweater vests which can be layered with a turtle neck in the winter and a short sleeve tee in the summer. Having lacy sleeves also hides the upper arm area. I have several heavier-weight long cardigans that I use as a coat in the fall-winter-spring times Again, just easier to put on and take off.
I like fingerless gloves and have several pair of compression-material gloves. They provide support for my sore thumb and let me use my Kindle Fire.I find that warmth around the wrist pulse points keeps my fingers warm.
Colors – warm neutrals, blues & greens.
Susan says
I have received hand knitted wool socks from a quilting friend. They are the best, just make sure they are long enough. The other item I admire on my knitting friends are cowls or scarves. I knit but never finish anything.
MJ Fish says
I am a non-knitter. I would not wear a hat, cowl, scarf or fingerless mitts. I would, however, like a pair of hand knitted socks. I think they are a good choice to make because they’re typically not going to be highly visible, so you don’t have to try to think about something that will fit in with other clothes that the person wears.
Colour: personally, I would like a really bright, unusual colour, but to be on the safe side, I think you could knit grey or cream socks and almost everyone would wear them.
If I could choose, it would definitely be a sweater or jacket but I appreciate that those are a lot of work and expensive to buy yarn for. So, if it couldn’t be one of those, again, I’d ask for socks.

Only knitted booties for a newborn, but lost the pattern in a basement flood. But my Grandma made lots of things and what I treasure today is the shawl which wasn’t knitted but I remember the words hairpin lace. The other thing right now I tempted to use are the slippers she made me in pink and white that I saved. My Grandma past away over 34 years ago. I think a pair of slippers would be the best present, very useful even in Arizona today.

If I were a normal person, I would love a loose cowl or socks. Since I have a horrible wool allergy, I would be very disappointed I couldn’t use a gift you’d made me! (I tried knitting a washable wool cowl a few years ago. I had to stop a few inches in. My hands were breaking out.) I also have a very short neck, so even a mock turtle neck is out.
You know your recipient best. I’m guessing whatever you make and gift will be greatly appreciated.
I love seeing all of the things you make!
Rebecca in SoCal says
I’m surprised at all the cowl dislike! I think either a cowl or a scarf.would be useful, or fingerless mitts might be good. I think you should make a color you enjoy knitting with. As far as I’m concerned, any color is a neutral if it’s dark enough!
I covet lacy knits. Some of the shawls you’ve made with beads look fun. However, one thing you’ve made that I just drooled over is a solid-colored shawl with long lines in a variegated yarn that went to an edge where they widened into a leaf or feather shape.
Nancy says
Quilter not a knitter.
I would probably do a scarf. Most people will wear scarfs. I like the fingerless mittens someone made me. I used to wear them every day at work because the building was to cold and I could still type so that is a good choice also. I don’t wear many hats I used to have a knitted band that covers my ears. That is kind of nice. I do wear wraps when I sit and bind so I like the idea of a shawl but not everyone does. I would probable go a neutral color. So you can feel free to make any of those for me anytime you like. I would actually take just about any color. 😉
Kathleen says
I don’t knit much. I have made hats and booties for new babies and simple scarves for adults. If I was the recipient I’d like a hat – floppy tam type or mittens. But I live in the Pacific Northwest and use those all the time.
April Reeves says
What should I make? scarf or fingerless mitts (or even a matching pair). I’m in the no cowl crowd.
What color should I make? Like your quilting, whatever colors you like.
what would you ask for and what color would it be? I would want dishclothes. They have some yarn that is actually made for scrubbing but the more rough yarn works too. I actually have one is a circle that I love.
I’d LOVE to have one of those? For me, it would be a shawl as I have a slight allergic reaction to wool and shawls generally are drapped over other clothing.
