Freezing Cat

The Importance of a Grandma

The funniest thing about Cat, at least to me, is that we went from “I think I saw a cat” to having a demanding, spoiled, hissing cat.

Vince has set up a spot for her to stay warm – just a heavy piece of cardboard with a heat lamp hanging high enough above it that it doesn’t get the cardboard too hot and he’s anchored it so it can’t be knocked over. It’s out of the wind so he only turns it on if the night low temps are below about 30.

Once he turns the light on, she wants it on day and night. The day temps can be in the 70’s and Cat is begging for her heat lamp. I think I’ve read that cats like to stay warmer vs. colder but she has a very thick fur and we are not running a heat lamp when it’s 70 degrees outside.

When Vince goes outside, she will follow him around meowing and if he stops and says “What do you want?”, she’ll usually run back to her food bowl, stand there and meow til he puts more food in her bowl.

Yesterday we were out with short sleeves so it was not cold but Cat kept following Vince around and when he asked her what she wanted and followed her lead, she went back to the heat lamp and stretched out under it, wanting him to turn it on. He wouldn’t but then he went out after it started getting colder and turned it on.

Before we went to bed, Vince looked out the window to see if she was under her light. Blurry picture taken through the window and from a distance at dark but help, she’s snoozing under the warmth of her light.

We laughed about how spoiled and demanding she’s gotten.

I’m glad Vince didn’t turn on the lamp in the daytime! That’s beyond “spoiled.” She may have Vince trained, but not twisted around her little toe.

It is nice that she has that for those cold nights, though.

I really can’t blame her for wanting it on in the night time, at least! I’d want two. It is funny that she’s gone from being practically invisible to following him around. She’s pretty smart, it seems to me.

We’ve had lots of cats over the last 40 years. They all loved the heat. Now we have an indoor cat like Boots. He likes a lamp on all winter – in the house in Southern California. Cats love warmth. That’s why they lay in shafts of sunlight, sleep on warm concrete, or fly into warm clothes fresh from the dryer. Even on a warm day they love heat. It’s not spoiled – it’s cat behavior. Lol!
