My spice cabinet is such a mess. I buy every spice for every recipe and some of the recipes call for really weird spices. Yesterday when Vince went to town and left me home alone, I decided to go through it all, pull out the duplicates to take to MO and in general, clean out the spice cabinet.
What the heck is this one and when did I ever use it . . or did I ever use it?
Don’t even tell me what it’s for or how it’s supposed to be used. I’ll Google it and find out. It went in the “Going to MO” box. I’ll have more time for experimenting in the kitchen there.
In an already too small cabinet for my spices, why did I have six, yes SIX, containers of Pinto Bean Seasoning. In my defense, only four of them had been opened and were half full so I combined those four to make two and one of them went into the “Going to MO” box.
These were all the spices that were duplicates in the cabinet. They’re all going to MO. I even see that I have two containers of nutmeg that were already duplicates. Oh goodness . . why am I not more organized?

Did you find long outdated spices? Last time I cleaned out my spice cabinet I found some that were WAY past a reasonable date. LOL Guess I’m unorganized too.

I did find a few but if I can still smell the aroma, I keep it and use more. Mostly they just lose their potency so if I found ancient tarragon and it still smells like tarragon, I’ll just use more of it in a recipe and taste it til I get enough. They’re too expensive to toss.

Rogan Josh makes makes a great lamb seasoning, there is an Indian dish named after it. We always get it when we eat at our favorite Indian restaurant.

I keep cumin and chili powder in the refrigerator ever since I had some get buggy on the shelf.

I did that recently. Now I need to clean out the pantry and put in better, wider shelves.

Looks like a great collection already. =) That was good thinking. Now you’ll have more room in Texas, and not have to buy much in Missouri.

I and a cousin once cleaned out my aunt’s spice cupboard – that was a hoot, and she had many duplicates. I have very shallow shelves on one side of my walk-in closet-type pantry, and have all my spices alphabetized though the big containers sit on a higher single shelf. I never pay attention to exp. dates either, and have seen blips lately that exp. dates may go by the wayside. Very few things are truly mandated to have them, and most are for the stores rotation purposes and marketing, so I’ve often ignored them on most items.

I did mine about 1 1/2 years ago. Go to vertical spice.com I do not have much storage space in my kitchen cupboards and bought several of the vertical spice racks to put in a cabinet next to the stove. They were pricey but the best organized shelf in my kitchen. I am going to order more to put in my pantry for canned and packaged goods. Then, do the dish side of my pantry. There are some great ideas for organization there. I can easily locate and read labels now. So neat all the time!
