Once I delete the 2019 UFO Challenge from the index bar across the top, we’re going to need something else so I was thinking about what we could do as challenges in 2020. Here are a few ideas I came up with:
- Color Challenge – I would list colors for each month and we would make something using that color. It could be anything crafty – from a hair bow to a quilt . . the sky is the limit. It doesn’t even have to be finished. This is meant to get us out of comfort zone as far as color. It would be single colors – not combinations. Heck, you could make a pillowcase or a hat and donate it.
- Gift Giving – Every month make something to be given away or donated. Every month could be something you’re giving at Christmas, something you’re giving “tomorrow”, or it could be something as simple as a homemade card to send to a friend; it could even be a meal you take to someone – just the idea of making something to share. Preferably, it would be something you’re giving to someone you don’t give something to often. If I make a cowl for Addie’s teacher, I would count that but if I make something for Addie, I wouldn’t count that because I make so much for her. But, there are no police . . so you do whatever makes you happy.
- Read a Book – This could be read a book or listen to an audible book. I would ask that you give the book, author and a blurb about the book in a comment because I’m always looking for new books.
- Learn Something New – This could be anything you’ve been wanting to learn. You could learn to use your Instant Pot; learn to sign up at the local library and use their online borrowing system; learn to do something new with knitting or with your sewing machine; learn a new language! It would be cool to look back at 2020 and realize we’ve all learned 12 new things. I can’t tell you how many times recently I’ve said “I don’t know how to do that!” We don’t have to be proficient at it — we just need to give it the old school girl try. Because I’m thinking about my spinning, I’m also thinking we could include “get better” so, while I’ve taken classes and had spinning wheels for years, I am not good so if I could spin like a pro by the end of the year, I’d be thrilled.
Any takers?

I think they all sound great – I was even going to say why not do them all, until I read #4. Learning something new would be the hardest one for me to achieve; at first thought, I don’t even know what I would say I wanted to learn. Anyway, any one or all would be great!

I would try it — learn something new or read a book. Learn something new could be a cooking technique or a knitting technique or anything. Sounds like fun!

Does this mean that you are not doing the UFO?
I have been thinking of doing a rainbow quilt so that may be an option I would be interested in.

Thank you Judy for challenging me for 2020. I have chosen to challenge myself to a “mix of two” projects. Every other month, I will switch from a project using a color of my choice and the next month, a project to be given to “Project Linus”.

I think the “Learn Something New” challenge would be great. There is always something to learn.

About learning anew language……may I humbly suggest learning American Sign Language (ASL). I cannot count the number of times I have encountered a person in a (name the place…store, DMV, restaurant, bank + etc) that needed help and I was able to assist them. Simple phrases is all that is needed. Just a thought.

I would vote for learn something new or gift giving. We have our quilt show this year and I need to be making things for them. I have so many things on my bucket list to learn that this would be fun.
Debbie says
Sounds like a good idea. All of them or at least a couple of them.
Cindy says
I like this idea – a LOT!
Nelle Coursey says
I think it is a great idea.

I’m in!
Karen says
This sounds like fun and something I could actually do!

I like them all. On the learn something new, will it have to be different every month? I love to read so that would be good. The color challenge would get me out of my comfort zone. And there are so many good causes to do things for.
Susan Nixon says
Sure, and doesn’t even matter which one to me.
Sherry V says
They all sound good.

Count me in

I love the idea of learning something new each month! Too often in the past few years I’ve bought a pattern, either a quilt pattern or a clothing pattern, and not taken the energy and time to learn how to make it. I must confess I bought a serger on Black Friday in 2017 and haven’t turned it on yet! I never thought I would have something like that just sitting there new, but there’s always plenty of things I know how to do calling me.
Have you checked out Goodreads for book recommendations? I have a list of books I want to read so I can easily toggle between Goodreads and the library app as needed. Also, you can compare books that you’ve read and liked with friends. I have a friend whose reading taste is closely aligned with mine, she’s a great source of new reading material.
Nancie says
Barbara, did you have to mention about the “Serger”? I too, have a serger that I haven’t used. Maybe we can encourage each other to try making “just one simple item” during 2020.

All of them sound great….I love learning new things so that would be the most exciting…
