Every time I make hot chocolate, which isn’t terribly often, I’m reminded of a story . . .
My mom went back to college . . heck, I don’t even know if she had ever been before. She must have graduated in 1959 because that’s the year she got the job in southwest Louisiana and we moved there. My sister was born in January, 1956 in Missouri so mom must have gone to college earlier because if we moved back to Louisiana at the beginning of the next semester, which would have been May or June, 1956, mom would not have gotten a four year degree by 1959. But, I guess if she went summers and took a heavy load she might have. I don’t know.
I do know that she graduated, got a job and we moved south in 1959. While we were living in Natchitoches, LA and mom was going to school, I was probably 3 – 5 and my sister was 1 – 3. Dad had a job and they had a lady that stayed with us at our house. She dipped snuff and I always wanted some so she’d mix up cocoa and sugar, put it in a jar lid and I’d pinch it up with my fingers, put it over in my cheek and I had my own snuff. It never made my mom happy to come home with sugary chocolate drool down my face and shirt. She knew I’d been dipping “snuff” with Malinda.
That wouldn’t fly with most parents today since sugar is not a good thing, and snuff . . corrupting a 3 – 5 year old with snuff . . that would probably be a criminal offense these days, even though it’s only cocoa and sugar. I wonder if mom bought all the cocoa or Malinda brought it with her to keep me quiet while she dipped her snuff in peace.
Anyway, for homemade hot chocolate, it starts with cocoa powder and sugar stirred together in a pot. Hot water is added.
Then the milk and vanilla and yummy! Even though most chocolate I don’t like, I love this stuff.
The recipe is on the Hershey’s cocoa container. A friend mentioned it on Facebook this evening and I had to stop and make some!
Lucky for me, we’re out of milk and since I won’t be going back to the store til after Christmas, no more hot chocolate for a while.
Seriously, Vince will be going to the store . . maybe tomorrow according to him. I’ll add milk to my grocery list. He’s so happy when I need groceries! He ordered a new Roku thing because ours has been a bit uncooperative lately and they were on sale everywhere this weekend. His will be ready to be picked up at Walmart tomorrow. The last time he went to town was Tuesday or Wednesday. I think it was Tuesday. That’s when he got gas and did something else he needed to do. From Tuesday to Monday . . that may be a record or him.

You inspired me to have hot chocolate. I made the Hershey’s Hot Chocolate for 1 recipe and it was really good. Made in a mug, 1 cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream. I’ll make that again on a cold night while decorating the Christmas Tree.

I love hot chocolate, and I don’t care how it’s made. I usually use Hershey’s Basic Five, or Only Five, or whatever it’s called and milk. And whipped cream is my choice, too. Paul used to make raspberry hot chocolate for me – so yummy, but I don’t get it right. I still drink it, but it isn’t right. =)

I too use the original Hershey’s Cocoa when I make “hot chocolate”. I was brought up that this was “cocoa” and anything else was “hot chocolate.” I’ve always preferred the slight bitterness of Hershey’s. Am I going to make some right now? Nope. Now I’m drinking a mug of one bag of Lipton tea and one bag of Stash’s Mango/Coconut. So good!

Have you ever eaten chocolate gravy? I had never heard of it. My 83 yr old friend mentioned it to me that her mother made just for her chocolate gravy (four brothers). So a couple of years ago I made it for her birthday breakfast. It was good.
I have the old weight watchers recipe for hot chocolate and it is good.

Even living in town there are days I don’t want to go anywhere or do anything! I think that is just my nature. I would hibernate like a bear if I could! LOL

I bet “kids” these days don’t even know you can make hot chocolate from a powder not in an envelope that you open, pour into a cup and add hot water. We grew up dipping white bread with butter into Hershey’s hot chocolate. Try it, you will love it.

For me it is buttered toast dipped in cocoa. So good!
