Don’t get the wrong idea, I love Rita but Rita is not a snuggly dog. She cannot stand to be held. When I pick her up to take her out, she’s fighting to keep from being held close. She will get up in the chair with Vince but maybe for 10 seconds, and she’s down.
That picture of Speck – he’s wrapped up in the scraps of the backing fabric for a quilt I made for my uncle in 2006. He was one of my dad’s brothers and he passed a way a few years back. One of his daughters, my cousin, has the quilt now.
It’s been two years since Speck died. I’ve begged every single day for a puppy. I understand why Vince says no . . we do have a lot of critters here, Rita’s medical bills – monthly vet visits to a specialist to check her eye pressure, two drops in each eye three times a day (one of those drops is now $70 for a tiny a bottle and that’s the discount with Good RX). We won’t board Rita because of her being blind and i we had another dog, it wouldn’t really be fair to him to board him and take Rita with is. Traveling with two dogs . . I know some people do it but I’m not sure I would want to do it. I want any dog we get to be crate trained and there is not one spot in this house where we can put a crate without it being totally in the way. Until a puppy would be 100% house trained, I wouldn’t want to bring it to my uncle’s or to a hotel or to Chad’s so . . in my head, I know I don’t need a puppy as long as we have Rita.
I have no idea where this photo came from or I would give credit but Vince just sent it to me. I said “I want him .. NOW!”
I’m taking it as progress that Vince even sent me a picture. When we first got married, I had always had a dachshund but had not had one for several years. For three or four years, Vince said “NO DOG IN THE HOUSE!” Then one day, he came home from work and said “Do you want to get a dachshund?” Well, yes, I DO! I think he found puppies for sale in The Thrifty Nickel or something like that so we drove to a neighboring county. They had three puppies. I wanted a different one from the one Vince wanted but we got the one Vince wanted. I was so happy to be getting one, I wasn’t going to argue. That one turned out to be Speck.
There was some show on HGTV that we watched where people repurposed junk and made cool things with it. There was an old guy they called “Speck” and he made the craziest, wildest things and I always loved them. Chad about maybe 11 or 12 and he’d watch that show with us. Vince started calling Chad Speck and it would aggravate him so they both decided the new puppy’s name should be Speck. I wasn’t going to argue.
He turned out to be the perfect pet and Speck was the perfect name for him. Addie only saw him a few times but when they got their dog, she named him Speck. She was only 3 years old and one day not too long ago, she said “Isn’t it funny that you had a dog named Speck and I have a dog named Speck?” Not funny at all . . you copied my dog’s name! 🙂 I didn’t say that but I thought it.

Believe me – I know how you feel. My baby-dog died of bone cancer in July. I miss him every day and want another dog very badly. But we may be looking at some life changes in the next few months, so I’m waiting. I know I need to be home to potty train, etc – so I’m waiting. Not very patiently, mind you – but I’m waiting.

Oh, how cute is that puppy!! You need that one!! Vince needs to get you that one!! Come on, Vince!!

If I get a vote, I vote that you need a puppy too! I’ll bet you’re on Santa’s ‘nice’ list. That’s got to be worth a puppy! If Vince sent you that picture. maybe he wants one too!

Have you looked at the animal shelter? Some of those dogs are housebroken and cuddlers. We have rescued 10+ dogs and while there was one that was not very social (and we knew that going in) most have been very loving. We currently have 2 rescues that are about 10 years old and getting a one year old next Saturday. I have a friend who rescues dogs and she can look for one for you.

I’m all for rescue dogs but since we have Rita and two cats that are pretty much “rescues”, I really want to get a puppy but that’s not to say I wouldn’t be thrilled with a dachshund rescue. I haven’t checked anywhere because so far, Vince says “NO!” so there’s no use in me looking.

I would vote not a puppy. Get an older dog who has lost its home, if you must have one. One that’s already trained! If I got a dog, which I can’t imagine I ever will, I’d go to the pound or pet store that does adoptions, and walk around the cages until one of the dogs picked me. It’s what I’ve always done with cats, and it’s worked beautifully. Rescue dogs can be the best, too. I have a friend who takes pit bull fosters and trains them – she’s a vet. I like her dogs … but I still don’t want one.

Oh puppy breath and kisses… sleeping with you … .. Yep we rescued a 3 year old Husky/Shepard mix (Gerberian Shepsky is the official name) and I wish we would of had her from a puppy. We are trying to break her of a few habits that cannot be and its hard. We camp with quite a few older people she cannot be jumping up on them, nipping at their fingers etc… Nala does not cuddle but she will come to you and lean on you .. I guess that is her cuddling.
I miss my Brie so much (we had t put our 10 year old dog down as she had back issues to include not being able to walk anymore with incontinence. Broke my heart) .. she also was a rescue but alot more timid (she had been a bait dog). But she never cuddled unless it was on the couch and she was scared.
I love doxies they are so adorable, but unfortunately we choose to have a bigger dog as one time out hiking with our doxie; an Eagle thought he was bait (good thing he was over weight or he may not ever of been around again). Baybee cakes ran under the car and we had a heckva time getting him out to go home. But when he did come out he ran into the back floor board and stayed there till we got home.

I’m not really a dog person (I’m a cat person…), but that puppy is so adorable I want him too! I understand all your reasons for not getting another dog right now, though.

Our last 3 dogs have been adult rescues. We got a Papillon who was nearly 10 years old. We had her 9 1/2 years. She was perfect: a cat in a dogs body! Next was an English Springer Spaniel. He was probably about 5. We only had him 4 1/2 years. He was THE BEST dog I’ve ever met. Well behaved. Personality to beat the band. He had some bad reactions to a flea treatment that triggered a neurological condition. Nine months later, he was incapacitated and we had to put him down. We currently have a 6 year old shih Tzu. This poor girl is obviously a product of a puppy mill. She’s got a lot of (expensive) medical conditions. They’ve all been great dogs, all things considered.
Having said all of that, though, I don’t think we’ll get another one for quite awhile. We travel far too much these days. A house doesn’t feel like a home without a dog.
I LOVE the puppy whose picture Vince shared with you!

Love that puppy! We’ve had 2 doxcins in a span of 28 years and I loved them dearly each had their own little personalities. After they passed I fell in love with my brother’s Boxers. Now our house is ran by 3 beautiful Boxers! But when the time has come and gone for these characters I’ve decided to rescue a Doxin for our last furbaby. If one isn’t available here in Corpus at that time there’s a wonderful Doxin rescue in San Antonio. I’m not sure if you’d like to drive all that distance to rescue but research online I’m sure there are some rescue places near you that specialize in Doxins. In the mean time for me I have a Doc in “Grand-Dog” that has a personality that beats all get out lol I’m in love with that little girl.

I would take in all the stray dogs if I could! No more puppies for me. I am getting too old to train them! I can love them at someone else’s house!

My daughter has dachshund puppies right now ready for sale in a month. One litter is registered AKC puppies. Her dogs are very smart and wonderful. They live in her house and are family dogs.
