A couple of years ago, we bought an Alexa device and a couple of Alexa Dots. OK . . I went back and looked and it’s been three years. We used them for a while but with our bad internet, they required more bandwidth than we could spare so we disconnected them all. They sat for almost three years.
Then, with the new internet coming, I was going to get get the Alexa devices working again but then I read about the Google Nest Hub and it seemed more in line with what we want so I ordered a nest hub, then with the issues with the fan in the bedroom, I got a hub mini to control the bedside lamps, then I loved it so I got another hub mini for my bathroom because it’s so much easier to listen to music in there than using the little blue tooth bathroom speaker in there.
Today Vince decided he’d take all the Alexa things and he’d use those. He spent a couple of hours de-activating them on my phone app and adding them to his phone app. They all needed updating but Vince got it all done.
He was used to using Google so he kept getting confused and saying the wrong thing. Example: Hey Google . . nevermind, I mean Alexa . . what football games are on today? So, two of them are now answering the question and you can’t understand either of them while they’re talking over each other.
Then . . Hey Google . . oops . . I mean Alexa . . what’s the weather going to be like today? Again, they’re both giving weather advice.
I went and unplugged the Google Hub in the kitchen, closed the bedroom door and the bathroom door so only Alexa sitting next to him could hear him.
It’s been constant questions.
- Alexa, what’s a blog? (After he asked me what I was doing and I said writing a blog post.)
- Alexa, how much yarn does one person need?
- Alexa, do cats and roosters become friends?
I think my life was easier when Vince didn’t have access to a virtual assistant!

Inquiring minds want to know…what did she answer? Especially the yarn and cat-rooster ??

And she answers all those questions? My son and Siri once had a conversation for 5 minutes about artificial intelligence. I’ve never been able to get past two answers before he says, “Susan, I don’t know the answer to that.” LOL Of course Alexa is smarter than Siri, but still.

Since Alexa doesn’t know how much yarn one person needs I interpret that to mean she can never have to much!

And if you leave them on, they are always listening!
