There’s probably no rules, other than those in my head, about what’s real and what isn’t. You’ve all probably seen the commercials for the “hamburgers” that are made with plant material. Where’s the beef?
When we were in Walmart the other day, I was reaching to get butter, and this caught my eye.
Plant butter! It’s dairy free and I understand there are people who cannot or will not consume dairy products but this all has me wanting to go back and re-read the Agenda 21 book.
It just seems weird but . . what do I know?
Sara Fridley says
I’m with you – just seems weird. I’m surprised that these non-dairy products don’t have to change their names from butter and milk to something more generic.
Pat says
I wonder what processes and additives have to be done to make this into a butter tasting product. Processing changes so many things in a food and we don’t know what it does to our body. Is it still real food?
Tony Bogusz says
Highly processed food just takes us further and further away from all of the natural stuff our far ancestors consumed to shape the DNA they ultimately passed onto us.
I put this movement into the same bucket as the (what I consider highly poisonous and insidious) high fructose sweeteners that are everywhere in today’s food. (Even in ketchup.) I don’t think Type 2 diabetes would be so epidemic if the cheaper than cane sugar, corn-based sweeteners wouldn’t be so wide spread in their use. Yuk !!!
Follow the money, and every man and woman for themselves, health-wise.
Linda in NE says
I don’t know about anyone else, but I only buy cane sugar. Simply Heinz ketchup doesn’t have HFCS in it. Heinz also has a variety of BBQ sauce without HFCS. I quit using the various veg oils a while back because of heat & chemicals used for processing, bleaching & deodorizing. I use olive oil or coconut oil, real butter instead of margarine & reserve Crisco for pie crusts (few & far between) I wish I could find unbleached, non-hydrogenated lard for pies without having to butcher a pig & rendering it myself like grandma used to do.

I heard that those “plant” burgers were actually fried in beef fat! You can’t trust advertisers anymore… It’s not just WHAT they say; it’s also what they DON’T say that you have to worry about….
Marilyn Smith says
Hubby tried the plant based tacos at Del Taco a few times…upset his tummy. Back to beef and ground Turkey!
Ann D. says
I’m one of those no dairy folks. I really miss cheese. Earth Balance spread is the first thing I’ve found that tastes like butter and isn’t full of weird ingredients and plasticizers. I don’t eat it a lot, but sometimes, you just want a piece of toast with butter.
Rebecca says
I first heard of “plant butter” just recently. I wonder what is the difference from margarine?
Nelle Coursey says
Did you hear where someone is suing Burger King because they grilled their veggie burger on the same grill as the meat and “contaminated” it!
Judy Laquidara says
I did not hear that but it isn’t surprising. On one hand, I suppose if I were a strict vegetarian, I’d be offended that they “contaminated” my food but, on the other hand, it probably should have been expected or, at least investigated if it was a real problem.
Susan Nixon says
I’m sticking with cow butter, thanks. My principles don’t extend to not making use of cow’s milk in any way possible. =)
