I’ve spent a ton of time dealing with The Knitter magazine. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with it . . just saying I couldn’t figure out how to get patterns into Knit Companion! I think I’ve figured it out but it is a time consuming process:
- Using the iPad (because it’s only IOS that can get the app or all the back issues); do a screen shot of each page of the pattern I want to import into KC. Thankfully most patterns only have four or five pages.
- Email those picture (.png) files to my gmail so I can open them on the Chromebook because, try as I might, I couldn’t get “print to pdf” on the iPad. Maybe it doesn’t do that or maybe I just can’t figure it out.
- Open the email in gmail on the Chromebook, make each page a separate .pdf, keeping them in the right order because despite my best efforts, the email jumbles them all up so they get attached as pages 1, 2, 3 and 4 but they may show up as page 3, 2, 4 and 1.
- Using an app on the Chromebook (pdf mergy), merge the pertinent files into one .pdf and email that back to the gmail account so I can open it on the iPad.
- Open the email, download the .pdf and import it into Knit Companion.
I’m also saving the files I’ve downloaded into Dropbox.
What makes the patterns so special in The Knitter? there’s so much color – colorwork, color blocking, two tones in stripes. Some of the sweaters are so classy looking. At least 75% of the patterns I’m seeing are just so different from the patterns I’m used to seeing. Maybe it’s just me.
In the back issues, there are 142 magazines so this is not a one or two day project but I think I wanted to make sure I could do it so it’s probably time I get back to knitting and stop looking at magazines.

Judy, I don’t know if this is easier or not but try importing the screenshot into Pages on your. IPad and then you can create a pdf from there. You use the little circle with three dot in the upper right, click and you will find an export link which includes pdf.

I just got my copy of Interweave Knits, and there is a good article about jog-less color work in the round?.
I’ll have to keep a look out for The Knitter, I’m not familiar with it.

That sounds complicated, but if we want something enough, we do what it takes. At least you found a way to do it!

I have an iOS app called “Printer Pro by Readdle”. I’ve had it a long time, and don’t recall what it cost. One of its options is to print to PDF. (I got it originally so I could print from my phone to an older printer that didn’t support AirPrint). It will work for you IF the sharing box in the magazine app offers you the “Open in…” option. Once it’s installed, you can open Printer Pro and select “PDF Printer” as your printer. Then in the magazine app, you use Open In to open the page in Printer Pro. I don’t know whether it will do each page separately, or do all 5 as one PDF.

P.S. Readdle also has an app called PDF Converter for 6.99, which might be better for what you need. Haven’t tried it.
