Onions are Planted

Another thing we did yesterday was plant onions. We got the garlic planted last week so yesterday we planted 400 onions. They won’t all come up or won’t all produce nice, big onions but I figure enough of them should produce that we’ll have plenty of onions next year.

I have one whole row and about half of another row in the onion bed that didn’t get planted so I’m going to plant greens in those rows probably after the chance of thunderstorms is past. I haven’t even looked in my seed bucket but my first choice is collard greens. After that, I’ll either plant kale or mustard greens. There’s another patch Vince started tilling up but didn’t finish because a belt broke on the tiller. That’s the other thing that happened.

I think the plan is that he’s going to go to town today and get a belt, then finish tilling the new spot, then we’ll plant it, spread some straw over it and cover it with tarps til after the threat of storms. It’s a smaller patch and will be easier to cover than the rows next to the onions.

This time of year we eat so many greens and it’s very nice to have them in the garden instead of going to the store, buying them and hoping they stay fresh til I cook them. It’s been about two weeks since I went to the store, by myself, and bought a bunch of greens. I think I have one bunch of collars and one bundle of broccoli left. It’s all needing to be used but if I had greens in the garden, I could easily go three weeks without going to the store.

I’ve never planted a fall garden. Just always too much going on this time of year with kiddos and it gets dark by the time I get home from work. But I really want to plant onions, garlic, and greens too. Never have so I’ll do some research first but I like research. lol

Also sorry to hear about your chickens. I’m working on overcoming my extreme fear of possums. I know where they live around me and it just far enough away and somewhere i don’t venture that I’m letting them be. I have a friend that raised some and they still come visit them and snuggle. I had to unfollow her fb page while she raised them. lol
