Vince had to order a new garden tiller this week and as I was preparing to write a blog post about the tiller, I was asking him . .
Me: Did you buy a front tine or a rear tine tiller?
Vince: Front.
Me: Do you like front or rear better?
Vince: It depends on what I’m doing. They both have their place. Kinda like the difference in a car and a pickup . . they’re both useful but your preference depends on how you’re using them.
Me: OK . . I get it. Sometimes you really need both.
Vince: Yes. Kinda like a wife and a girlfriend!
Did he really just say that??

LOL – I know he’s kidding, but it sure struck me as funny :-).

I’m pretty sure Vince figures one woman is all he can handle . . at least that’s what I’m hoping he thinks! 🙂

I usually go for rear tines. You just walk behind it and put pressure downward on the handlebars and let it dig in. With front tine, you have to lift the handlebars to get the tines to deeply and vigorously dig in. One gets tired of “lifting the weight” to constantly add downward pressure when working in an open area with front tines. Front tines are better only when you’re perpendicularly tilling near a wall, concrete foundation, or fence that goes all the way down to the ground…which isn’t often. If you go parallel to the obstruction with your tilling, rear tines still have the advantage of not tiring you as quickly or beating you up by fighting you. Don’t fight gravity…gravity always wins. Just my two cents worth…

As Vince said, there are reasons for using both. Vince is tilling out in the middle of nowhere so there are no obstructions.
He uses the rear tine for the major tilling work but he likes front tines for mixing in compost, manure, etc. Also, if we make the rows wide enough, he will run down them with the front tine tiller to break up the weeds.
They both have their purpose . . that’s why Vince keeps one of each.

Did he get it on sale? LOL

Uh oh! he might be in real trouble now! But we all know he has no time for a girlfriend because (according to him) you have him working all the time. LOL
