I am so impressed! Every time I think I can’t live here any longer (like today when I got stung by another wasp . . on my foot and it hurts like heck), something will happen and I am reminded what a nice place this is to live.
Monday, as I’ve already shared, we both got sick after having eaten at a restaurant. I was miserably sick all night. Vince wasn’t as sick but as the day went on, he got worse. This morning he said he felt awful and was going to the doctor. I offered to drive him and he said no. The doctor, not too long ago, also got sick after having eaten at the same restaurant. They didn’t do bloodwork . . the doctor was fairly sure after his own experience and stories he’s heard, that it was food poisoning and he gave Vince a shot and antibiotics. When Vince called me from the pharmacy, he was slurring his words and said he was dizzy. I told him not to drive home, I was coming to get him but he said no . . he was going to sit for a while because the meds the doctor had prescribed conflicted with some of his heart meds and it was going to take a while for them to contact the doctor and get different prescriptions. He said he felt better by the time he was ready to drive home but even the pharmacist offered to call someone to drive him home. Hard head! He drove home and went to bed.
Yesterday he called the health department and talked to the man who does restaurant inspections. He’s been to this particular restaurant with complaints before! He told Vince, since it was late in the afternoon, that he would visit them today and get back with us. I figured that was the last we would hear about it but no . . he called us back today and I talked to him. He gave me a full report of the violations he found (and there were several). I was really impressed . . that he went straight to the restaurant as he said he would and that he reported back to us, as he said he would.
If this place can’t or won’t clean up their act, I doubt they’ll be around much later – my words, not his. I know two people who will never ever eat there again.

It might gross you out even more, but here, we can see the health department restaurant inspection reports online. I searched for “county health department restaurant inspections”. The list even includes school cafeterias.

This is the first place I’ve lived where the health department for restaurants are NOT published in the local newspaper and on websites. Many also have a “health grade” posted when you walk in. I wish it was all available to see here. I think we’re down to eating at Chick-Fil-A and that’s it.
It’s a darned good thing I like to cook and even better that my kitchen isn’t inspected by the health department! 🙂

Yep that’s the Health Dept’s job. Also if you have carry out, or take something home, and get sick they will want to test it.

I am telling you Paul Coghlin knows what he is doing!! He is a good man and if he tells you something you can be sure he is going to do it. He knows all about food service and what should and should not be done! He will close them down if he has to. I worked with him at the state school when he was in charge of the cafeterias on both sides of the street. I think he was in that business for at least 15, maybe 20 years! He is a good man! I will pass your compliment on to him. He is a friend of mine on FB.

Sorry, misspelled his name! It is Paul Coghlan and he has a boot on his foot from torn tendons and is not feeling well at all. But he still does his job and does a good one at that!!

He told me that. He was so nice. It really makes me appreciate this area. Too bad some of our state representatives aren’t so responsive. 🙁

Judy Laquidara says
There are some very reputable sushi restaurants where I’m very comfortable eating. Most of the buffet type places that have sushi on their bars . . it’s not real sushi and it isn’t raw.

Judy that is scary and I’ll tell you why. A couple of weeks ago I was at doctors office and had to get blood work too. While waiting to give blood drawn in a hall I heard a noise. I couldn’t see anyone but me since it was almost lunch time. The grumbling noise continued. I got up and started looking from where it was coming from. I found a man slumped over in a chair . He looked like he had had a stoke and couldn’t speak and drueling down his face. I ask him question if ok and nothing. I started screaming for help from staff in office. They were some men valets by the door they came running in. Ask them to get help. Saw the mans cellphone in his pocket. Got other man to open and see who he called last and had him dial the number. All this while holding the guys head up and trying to get more help. Lady answered the phone told her what was going on and did she know this man. She said yes it was her husband. Told her where he was and to get there as fast as she could something was wrong. Help arrived their within just few minutes. They called a code and more help arrived. I checked later on him with staff. Come to find out he had been in doctors office they gave him a shot of something. What happened was he had allergic reaction to it and was in antiflatic (sp)shock. Please be careful when you get shots of medicine you’ve never had before of even have at doctors office Wait for a few minutes in office before leaving. It could mean life or death. I’m glad Vince got ok but this is a true story it happen to this man. I’m so glad I was there and could help.
Sorry this is long but thought your reader might need to remember this too. Be safe not sorry take a few minutes after nay kind of shot.

My granddaughter works in a restaurant here in Bastrop County TX. Last week there was a surprise inspection. I am glad to say they passed (she is a smart lady and a manager so I expected there would be a passing grade). And of coarse the things not right will be fixed right away (minor things).
I too have had bad food and the follow up of that is pretty bad.

That is impressive. You can’t pile up complaints with the health department and still have a good client base. Do they have them post their grade in the window? California does, and Fran wouldn’t eat anywhere that didn’t have an A in the window. I couldn’t believe people would post a B or a C and stay in business, but I’m sure they told everyone they had fixed the issues.
