You probably know how I feel about Madelinetosh yarn. It’s kinda like your first love . . maybe. I don’t know. Why did I even say that? My first love was one I’ll never forget but one I definitely am better off without. Oh goodness . . that was a lot of years ago . . a LOT of years!
Anyway . . Madelinetosh is one of the first yarns I fell in love with. I’m guessing that close to half of my stash is Madelinetosh. I’m not sure if they’ve changed or if it was me that changed. Isn’t it always that way with first love? 🙂 I can’t move on from that analogy, can I?
According to this blog post, I purchased my first Madelinetosh yarn in 2010. Also according to that blog post, Madelinetosh Vintage was $18 per skein in 2010, then it was $23 in 2016 and now it’s $26.50. Money in the bank, I tell you!
This is the first project I made with my first Madelinetosh yarn. And, I finished it! And I made a second one for a friend.
Oh, goodness, seeing that white carpet makes me break into a sweat. Four and a half years I lived with a dog, a husband, a teen and his friends . . and we never ruined that carpet. I don’t think we could ever do that again.
Now we’ve discussed my first love and my white carpet, let’s get back to yarn.
Yesterday I was working on the ADVENTurer Wrap, using a Madelinetosh Advent kit from last year – 25 little skeins of yarn and I wanted a full skein of every color.
This yellow is Mac & Cheese and I love it and I want more of it! With each new color, I was tempted to order more yarn. I had even put a couple of colors in my cart.
Then, I got notice that Madelinetosh was having a 40% “final sale” on everything in stock. Speculation is flying about what this means. Are they closing? Are they going to sell only retail? Are they selling the business? Are they cleaning out the warehouse for new stock and new colors? No one knows but 40% off was hard to walk away from.
Both of these are Farm Twist. That’s the yarn I used in my Comfort Fade Cardi. It’s a new base and I had zero in my stash before ordering yarns for that sweater. I loved knitting with it but haven’t used it enough yet to know how it’s going to hold up but, what if . . I can’t get it and don’t have any in my stash?
I bought enough to make cardigans of each – the top one is Sabine and the bottom is Beautiful Liar. Then I went back and ordered a few skeins of Tosh Merino Light. That’s the yarn I love for shawls and I often used one skein – a shawl with a couple of colors, one skein of each so I never mind buying just one skein of any given color.
Even though I’ve moved on from my devotion to Madelinetosh yarn, for several reasons, I will miss them if they’re not around any longer. They have so many colors of so many yarns and out of necessity, it’s my go to yarn when I need four or five colors of the same base that will go together.
I’m hoping they aren’t going away but if they are, the knitting community is going to feel the loss for a long time.

It’s quite possible I placed a second order last night for a SQ of Mac ‘n Cheese – I love that color too!

They do have beautiful yarn but I would be willing to guess they are just getting rid of colors and maybe by having a sale on everything is the way to do it.

For the sake of so many who love their yarns, I hope you’re right.

It will be interesting to find out, when the other shoe drops. In the meantime, I hope you got what you wanted at 40% off! That’s cheaper than your original pricing.
