Swatching

Last night I swatched two different yarns for the All of the Lights cardigan Karen and I are starting October 1. If anyone else wants to jump in and knit it with us, you’re welcome to join. We have a “loose” deadline of December 1 to get it finished. I am not a betting girl but if I were, I’d bet against either of us getting it done by that date.

I swatched with Miss Babs Yowza on the left and Madelinetosh Tosh DK on the right.

Gauge:

The correct gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows in the cable pattern using 4 mm needles. Knowing I’m a loose knitter, I swatched with 3.75 mm needles.

Miss Babs Yowza

I love the yarn, love the color, but I think this yarn is just a bit lightweight for this project. The gauge is a good bit off. This stitch gauge is 29 stitches/4″, which would make a significant difference in the size of this sweater. The row gauge is perfect.

Madelinetosh Tosh DK

I was a bit concerned about the variation in color causing the cables not to show up so well but I think that’s not a problem. I am a bit concerned about the yardage I have. This is a discontinued yarn and I cannot get more. I have 1,800 yards. The pattern calls for 1,687 yards and, as I’ve mentioned, some people have run short.

Planned Modifications

Here are the mods I plan to make, all of which should mean I do not run short on yarn.

  • No pockets. I don’t like pockets on my cardigans
  • Sleeves – I may leave off all the texture stitches and do only the cables on the sleeves.
  • Length – I will make the sweater at least a couple of inches shorter.

Now, I’m anxious to get started on this project.

Can that pattern be found other than Ravelry? I tried searching, but didn’t find the pattern.

JoJi makes her patterns available also through her website jojiknits.com but if there are any updates or changes you wouldn’t receive them unless you buy thru Rav.

You know where I have seen some lovely Czech glass buttons in that peachy color?! You definitely need to use that yarn for a sweater that needs buttons. ๐Ÿ™‚

I also think the cables show up very nicely on the blue. It does look shorter than the peachy swatch (row gauge?). That;s going to be so pretty!

Oh ye of little faith! Of course we’ll get it done by December. I don’t think I specified the first of the month – I’m aiming for sometime during the month of December. LOL After reading more of the notes from others I realized I may not have enough of the yarn I bought for this project so I ordered something else – waiting for it to get here so I can swatch. My Knitted Animal Friends book arrived yesterday and I ordered some cotton yarn – I’m itching to knit one of them too. It’s going to be a busy few months.

You narrowed it down! That’s a big accomplishment right there. =)
