Yesterday I mentioned that I was making a doll sweater for a friend’s granddaughter, as well as a matching sweater for the granddaughter. I had planned to make Tallulah for the granddaughter. I had already made that pattern for Addie and knew it was a quick and fairly easy pattern. As I searched for a somewhat matching pattern for the doll, I decided to use the same pattern, Tallulah, for the doll and make the newborn size.
My doll, that I bought to use for trying on clothes I’m making for Addie’s doll, only has one outfit, which is gray and pink and she’s wearing pink boots. That’s a nice match for the pink sweater!
My doll is an 18″ doll so I’m hoping my friend’s granddaughter also has an 18″ doll. This sweater is a tad big on the 18″ doll so it’s going to be too big for her 15″ doll. If I do this again, I’m going to use a size smaller needle, probably a 3.5 mm, and hope the newborn size is a little smaller and a better fit for the 18″ doll.
The yarn I used is I Love This Yarn and it’s a DK weight. The skein says it’s Sport Weight but the reviews say it’s more of a DK weight and it has a “3” weight rating and a size 3 is DK. The yarn band recommends using a size 4 mm needle, as mentioned above, but for the matching sweater for the little girl, I’m going to use a 3.75 mm needle.
It’s acrylic because I figured the doll sweater may get lots of wear; the mom is busy and I figured hand washing/laying flat to dry wasn’t going to fit her lifestyle.
The sweater used only about 2/3 of one skein of the yarn for the newborn size sweater. The skeins are 230 yards.
Overall, I’m thrilled with this doll sweater and I think the recipient will love it too.

That is a cute sweater! I like the lace detail on the sleeves. If you have similar yarn, you might try going down to a fingering weight for the doll sweater. That would make the sweater smaller.

The pattern calls for DK weight. I think fingering weight would require a good bit of math and since I didn’t know doll dimensions and since the sweater is so close to fitting, I think sticking with DK weight and going down a needle size will work. I want to use the exact same yarn for the doll/girl sweaters.

It’s so cute! It didn’t take long, either. Is the one her grandfather found a 15″ doll, then?
