Ribbons for Sweaters

Most of the ribbons for stabilizing button bands on sweaters have arrived.

There are dachshunds, cactus, boots, flowers, donuts, lovebugs, lovebirds, lamas, and a few other things.

This is how it will be placed along the wrong side of the button band. This is a 1″ ribbon but I’m going to use a 5/8″ ribbon for this narrower band. I have the gray elephant ribbon in both sizes.

Some of the more decorative buttons are a bit heavy and will cause the button band to stretch and flop but adding the ribbon stabilizes the band.

Most knitters probably use some matching, “does not draw attention” ribbon but I love the brighter, happier ribbons that make me smile. That side of the button band will show some when the sweater isn’t buttoned and I rarely wear my sweaters buttoned.

Having all this pretty ribbon makes me want to knit more cardigans . . or maybe just finish some I have started!

I love those elephants. I nearly bought some of that one. My first of two ribbon packages arrived today. 🙂

I think the fun ribbons make the sweater much more fun. It’s like a little surprise!

How do you attach it to the sweater….

I hand stitch it to the back of the button band. Denise showed a picture of one she did on her blog (justquiltin.wordpress.com) and I’ll show a picture of mine once it’s done.

Judy have you ever used the magnetic snaps on sweaters? How do you attach the grosgrain ribbon? My hubby’s sweater is almost done and he needs to have snaps.

I have not used them so I really shouldn’t say anything more but I’m wondering if, without stabilization, a heavy button wouldn’t still cause the knitted area to droop or stretch. It’s kinda like, for those of us who made clothes, we put interfacing around where the buttons and buttonholes would be.

Finishing what’s started would be faster. =) I like those ribbons, too.

Good ribbon choices. Life is too short for matching facing!

I’m with you. I love the fun pop of color with the novelty ribbons!
