This has been a weird week. Almost every night I go out hunting scorpions. I had hardly seen any . . one or two a week until this week. I killed 38 scorpions, all outside, in one week. We killed . . Vince did it . . a snake in the chicken coop. I got stung by a spider. And, I went out to water some plants, reached down to turn the water faucet on and just beneath the faucet was this guy.
It’s a tarantula of some kind. They don’t really scare me . . not like snakes and scorpions, but we don’t see many tarantulas around here. We saw two or three in the shop not long after we moved here and I don’t think we’ve seen one since. He kinda caught me by surprise. They eat bugs so I wish we had more of them! Outside . . not inside.
I’m hoping for a week with no snakes in the coop, fewer scorpions, no spider bites and more tarantulas outside!

How is your finger? Is the swelling down now?

Oh my gosh! You have got to move away from there, quick!

Holy cow, you are one brave lady I would still be running down the road. I’m not meant for country living, I love the beauty of the land but not the insects or snakes.

I had a pet tarantula in my classroom for several years. They are very interesting, and the students liked watching it. At home in the summers, it would hardly move, but in the classroom, it moved quite a bit! I don’t mind them. If you touch them, the little hairs make your fingers itch, and they are very fragile, so you don’t want to drop them from waist height, but otherwise, they are pretty shy and they DO eat a lot of bugs!

I’ll come help you pack. It’s become clear to me that land is not meant for humans. Were it me I’d be somewhere else within the hour. If that’s your thing and they don’t frighten you, then absolutely you are the woman. I’m not a girly girl but some things give me heart palpitations just to think of.

Normally, the bugs and things don’t bother me so much so long as it’s just one here and one there but this week, there’s been something every day. The past couple of days have been uneventful so hopefully things will go smoothly.

The sightings are probably due to the hot weather. I know snakes crawl around looking for water and they love to lay in the sun and bask there! August is when they shed their skins and they are blind. Or it is usually around this time. Don’t know about this year, it has been a weird one!
