Don’t worry – there are no pictures! You’re welcome!
This evening I went out to check for eggs. It wasn’t nearly dark but the sun was low. When it’s this hot, I check for eggs four or five times a day. When I looked down in one of the egg boxes, it looked like a snake in there but, the way he was buried in the shavings, it kinda looked like a pile of chicken poop. I went back to the house to get Vince.
Me: I think there might be a snake in the chicken coop.
Vince: Where?
Me: IN THE CHICKEN COOP!
Vince: In the main part of the coop?
Me: No, in one of the laying boxes.
Vince: Which one?
Me: Oh, my goodness! Just please come help me.
Vince: You aren’t SURE if it’s a snake?
Me: Vince, just get the snake grabber and follow me!
We got to the coop. I showed him which box it was in. He looked . .
Vince: I think it’s poop.
Me: I wasn’t sure so I didn’t want to stick my hand in there.
Vince: Oh, wait . . it is a snake.
Yep, it was a snake! That’s the second one this summer. Last summer I didn’t find any snakes in the coops. The summer before . . 16 snakes in one coop.
I think that’s so weird . . 16, then none and now 2.

My sister-in-law is terrified of snakes and just a couple of days ago she called, frantic, that there was a snake in the garage, and my husband, her brother, needed to come up immediately and kill it… He did go right up, but instead of killing it like she wanted, he brought it down to show me, then put it down in the woods behind our house. It was a small (3 ft) rat snake, so not poisonous. If it had been poisonous, it would have been another story, but in the 45 years I’ve lived here I’ve never seen a poisonous snake….thank goodness!!

I saw snakes in my yard about 7 times this spring, but I had not seen any for a while. Saturday I was walking across the yard and almost stepped on one. I saw it just in time, but I’m sure I looked goofy with one foot in the air trying to step a different direction so I would miss it. I had on flip-flop type sandals, and I’m pretty sure even a garter snake would NOT be happy if I stepped directly on it. Then on Sunday, while I was mowing the yard I almost ran the mower over one. I saw that one right before the edge of the mower went over it, so I backed up and gave it a chance to depart the scene. I’m going to have to start staring at the grass everywhere I walk again…ugh!

Excellent mental image of someone standing on one foot trying to change directions! Thanks for the giggle. My MIL did the mowing at their house in the country and happily mowed right over any snake that was in her path!

I’m glad you didn’t reach in to check it out, knowing how you feel about snakes!

We wear snake chaps when we go camping, some friends came with and had none. When they saw the snakes, they swore they were getting snake chaps. But alas they won’t be camping with us ever again after this time around. My sanity cannot take it ! lol
