Last week I saw that Eat, Sleep, Knit had marked down the Madelinetosh discontinued colors. You know that I usually don’t mind ordering a few skeins of yarn but I’ve truly come to realize I’ll probably never use all that I have and if we move, I have a heck of a lot of yarn to move. It’s one thing to have it tucked away here and there but when I fill up an entire moving van with yarn, Vince may come unglued . . and we do not want that to happen!
I did end up ordering some of the yarn but I honestly put it in my cart and took it out a dozen times. I would say to myself “Once this color is gone, you can’t get it anymore!” Then I’d say “But a new color is going to be better!”
I’ve told this story before but back probably 40 years ago, there was a purple dress at my favorite dress shop in Lake Charles and I really wanted it it. I tried it on and it fit perfectly but I talked myself out of getting it. A day or so later, I had to have it, went back and it was gone. The determining factor for me, since the purple dress incident, has been “If I don’t get it and can never get it, will it bother me? Will I think about it from time to time and wish I had gotten it?”
Several of the discontinued colors . . no, I love them but it won’t bother me at all not to have them.
Blue Gingham in Madelinetosh DK . . that’s the color I could see myself always wishing I had gotten so I ended up getting 8 skeins which may end up being the yarn I use for an upcoming sweater.
I ordered 4 skeins of Madelinetosh Vintage in Oak, which is also a discontinued color. Here’s my reasoning for ordering that and I think by the time you finish reading, you’ll agree that it was probably a waste of money. I have 9 skeins of Madelinetosh Vintage in Oak. It’s very old – probably at least 8 or 9 years old. I wanted to use it for a sweater last fall but I needed a bit more than what I had. I knew it was a longshot but I ordered an additional 4 skeins. The colors were so far off that I knew I couldn’t do anything to make them all work together. So, now that it’s discontinued again, I figured I’d order 4 more skeins and maybe they were all left over from the batch with the last four I’d ordered so I’d have 8 skeins of Oak that match. But, if 9 skeins of the old Oak weren’t enough for a sweater, why would I think I needed 8 skeins of the new Oak? Don’t ask!
The next day, I got an email from ESK saying the four skeins were mismatched, though they would probably work if I alternated skeins. What the heck? Now I’m wondering if any of the Oak I will have will work together . . but I went ahead and got them. I’m sure there’s something I can do with all that beautiful, dark, olive-ish green yarn.

Now why can’t you maybe make a stripe with the three different Oak colors. They are all Oak just a bit different in shades.Just wondering and trying to help out.

The colors aren’t different enough to make stripes. It would look like I had used mismatched skeins.

Oh yes if you really, really really like something and have the money get it otherwise you will always regret it. No matter what it is food, material, clothes, yarn and chickens etc.
