I walk by the mushroom logs a dozen times a day and every time, I stop and scrutinize the logs to see if I see any signs of life.
I don’t see anything that looks like a potential mushroom crop but heck, I don’t even know what I’m looking for. Nothing looks different to me.
But, speaking of mushrooms, Chad has been finding quite a few morels and someone’s friend gave the friend a bunch of them and he’s supposed to share them with Chad so he said “When you get here, be ready to get off your diet. I’m frying morels!” And I said “Great!” I love those things and haven’t had them in more than 8 years. There was a little wet weather creek by our house and they would grow along that creek.
It’s funny that there are things indigenous to almost every area. We get used to those things, move away and miss them. Crawfish in Louisiana, Burgoo in Kentucky, Morels in Missouri.
Hmm . . I should probably stop here. Snakes and scorpions in Texas! No . . there are a lot of good things about Texas. Just a few days ago Vince and I had this conversation:
Vince: Remember when I first came here and I called you and told you everything was dead and brown and there were no trees?
Me: Yes . . you got here in May. Think how I felt when I got here in August and the lake was completely dried up and we were renting a house on the lake!
Vince: Now, I think it’s kinda pretty here.
At that point, I had Vince examined by the psychologist and he has been committed! Not really . . but I do think that it kinda goes along with the saying “Bloom where you’re planted”. It’s home. It does feel like home and the weird thing is . . when I leave here, which is mostly to go to MO, as much as I hate leaving Chad, Nicole and Addie, it always feels good to get back here where we have no traffic, I’m familiar with everything and hardly ever get lost. Most importantly for me, I feel safe and comfortable here . . but it’s still brown and everything looks dead and there are too few trees.

I’ve never been to central Texas, but like you, I tend to think we should bloom where we’re planted. I loved living on Staten Island when I was in the Army but I also love this area (Western PA). Of course I would still prefer less cold and snow during the winter, but you can’t have everything…. The mushrooms sound yummy!!

Morels sound Yummy! I looked around yesterday, but didn’t spot any. It’s raining today, so maybe this week.

My husband keeps talking about moving to East Texas where we once had a house. A few days ago I suggested we not move. Oh My! The look on his face and he said he never would have thought I’d say that. Time will tell.

Live there long enough, and the desert will blossom like a rose. =)
