These three little chicks are the most independent little things. The mom brought them out of the coop when they were just a day or so old. Even on the days when it was cold, she had them outside. We laughed, thinking about how we would keep baby chicks under heat lamps until they were half grown and she had them out in the cold and they all survived.
They found ways to escape right from the beginning. At first, mom would panic and she’d be squawking so much, I was thankful we didn’t have close neighbors.
The babies are about a month old now. There’s a little hole at the bottom of the gate. They go in and out that hole all day. They’ve found a spot where they can go under the fence on the other side. Vince said he thought about fixing the spots but figured they’d just find another way to get out and since they already know where to get back in, he didn’t want to confuse them. If a fox or something was after them, they would go to the place most familiar and if he had fixed those holes, they would be gone!
Baby chicks are so cute! They see me every day but I’m still big and scary to them. They’re out running around, always close enough to mom that they have a false sense of being safe because she’s on one side of the fence and they’re on the other, but when I get too close, they find their holes and run back in to be by mama.

Great survival instincts. I hope they are always successful in their escape.

How cute they are. They will eventually grow too big to get through those holes, and that will be a big surprise to them. =)
