Vince had his annual checkup and blood work done. He has now lost over 60 pounds . . that’s in three months! The doctor has instructed him to stop taking the statin he was taking for his high cholesterol. That was one of my main goals for him . . to get off the statin! Every bit of his blood work was great.
I am so proud of him! I feel like he has seriously dodged a bullet because he was not on a good path with his health due to poor eating habits and the weight we had both gained.
His doctor is in full agreement with the keto diet, which is great as some doctors are not.
I’m not recommending anyone go on the keto diet but I am recommending that if you need to lose weight to improve your health and your quality of life, you find a diet plan that works for you, and if you have any medical issues, discuss it with your doctor before beginning.

That’s great! I’ve looked at a couple of Keto recipe books and the recipes all seem to have ingredients I’ve never heard of and I’ve never seen in a grocery store. I was also told that the Keto diet wasn’t good for your kidneys. That I haven’t checked on yet, but after looking at the recipes I decided if it wasn’t something I could source locally at any grocery store, I wasn’t going to mess with it. I’ve only lost 8 lbs. since December, with just trying to cut out junk food and control portion sizes. Eight lbs. in 4 months is nothing compared to what you two have lost, but I’ll take it!! It’s definitely better than going the other way!! 🙂 Congratulate Vince on his turn-around! He’s got to feel great about his progress!!

One way to increase your weight loss is to add walking in your daily activity. My husband and I used fitbits to track our calories and steps. We were able to lose 65 and 40 lbs between Memorial Day and Labor Day three years ago. (Just by watching our portions, and walking a total of 5 miles or more daily.) Never gave up any foods or treats. Leto is working great for Judy and VInce, FitBits worked for us. Keep at it, and you will succeed!

Exercise is great for all of us — even those who do not need to lose weight. I wasn’t able to walk with my knee pain but now I can and will as soon as the cedar pollen lightens up a bit. As far as giving up foods or treats, unless someone has a very, very good diet already (no s sugar, no flour, very few grains), there are some things that have to be removed from the diet in order achieve the results Vince has achieved. He’s gone from having a high blood sugar and being in danger of pre-diabetes to having an excellent A1C count. That could not have been achieved if he had not totally removed sugar and white flour from his diet.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve tried to show our meals – to show how easy keto is to follow. I’m no doctor but I don’t see how the way we’re eating could be bad for the kidneys. Most every meal we have a bit of meat, and several green veggies. We drink lots of water. For instance, today we had grilled lamb chops with steamed asparagus and salad for our meal. Yesterday we had grilled chicken with steamed asparagus, green beans and a salad. Most days we eat one meal per day but some days we will have breakfast – usually bacon, ham or sausage and an egg or two.
For veggies, we mostly eat asparagus, artichokes, salads, collards, kale, mustard, green beans and okra. We are growing these things but I can’t imagine a grocery store that wouldn’t have most of these easily available.
There are quite a few “interpretations” of keto. We don’t take up on fats though we do use MCT oil and olive oil and use the Carb Manager app to keep track of our macros. I’ve never followed a more simple diet, and a diet where I have to make myself eat. Neither of us are having any cravings on this diet.

For those not familiar, the keto way of eating will send you shopping the perimeter of the grocery store (unless you have a fabulous garden!). Limiting carbs (bread, cereal, starchy vegetables) is a key. Any information sites about supplements, “magic keto pills”, or ways to accelerate weight loss are usually trying to sell something. Realize that just fresh food in the right combos and portions are what you strive for, and they are readily available. Vince’s results are wonderful!

Exactly! I thought we had great eating habits (except for my Dr. Pepper) but we’ve learned so much on this diet. We basically shop the fresh veggie section of the grocery store and that’s about it. We do eat some cheeses (I love string cheese for snacks). We’ve cut back on the amount of protein we eat so we don’t buy much meat any more.
When we first started, I thought the diet was a bit overwhelming but it was worth it to help Vince get some of the weight off. Soon I learned it’s the most simple diet ever and that fact that at meal time, I’m having to make myself eat – that makes it perfect for us. No cravings, no feeling like we’re being tortured. We eat the foods we like and never think twice about the foods we don’t want to eat.

I agree with vivoaks, I have looked at several recipes and it’s the seasoning. I can not find them at our grocery store. I like sweets and most recipes call for seasoning I have never heard of. Great weight loss for both of you.

That is fantastic news. I wish I could convince my husband to give up cereal, breads, pastas, etc. He thinks he will be deprived and starve! He needs to lose more than 100 lbs. but he just won’t do it – not even after the doctor told him he was pre-diabetic. I have given up trying to make healthy choices for him, although I am cooking healthier for myself, but it is really hard when you have no support from your spouse. Both you and Vince are doing wonderful.

Do you have a plan for slowing down the weight loss as you get closer to your goal? It can be easy to overshoot the goal. And it sounds like you want this to be the “normal” for you way of eating going forward, which is generally more sustainable than jumping back to your old habits.

Way to go, Vince!

I’m so happy you’ve both stuck with it. It’s wonderful that Vince is off Statins!
