We’ve scaled back quite a bit and with Vince taking such an interest in the garden, it’s going to make it so much easier. The fenced area is 100′ x 100′. Probably at least 1/3 is now planted in “crops” that are not replanted each year – blackberries, elderberries, asparagus and artichokes.
This is about the sum total of what we’ll be planting this year. You can see the garlic over to the left. Probably by mid-May, if not sooner, the garlic will be harvested. We’ll add compost to that area and plant okra there.
You can see the freshly tilled area to the right. Vince has been adding compost there and re-tilling it but that’s where the peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, squash and those type plants will go.
The middle area, that has been planted for a few weeks, has onions, kale, beets, spinach, lettuce . . the things that will grow til it gets to be too hot. Once it’s gone, we’ll be left with okra and that patch that’s not yet planted so we won’t be trying to keep beans and peas alive through the worst of the summer so . . we’ll see how it goes.
Hopefully it will be a productive garden . . which it definitely was not last year!

What variety of squash do you plant and how do you combat squash bugs?

It’s so neat and tidy, with the lovely rows. I hope all goes well with the plantings this year.
