Yesterday I swatched the Western Sky Knits Merino 17 for All of the Lights. That sweater is so gorgeous and I want the yarn to be perfect. I love everything about the Merino 17 worsted weight yarn, including the color, but I was afraid it wasn’t going to be right for this pattern.
I just don’t think the cables are going to show up well on this yarn, nor do I think the yarn is going to shine as well as it should if I use it for this pattern.
In my mind, I want to knit this yarn and this seems to the only yarn I want to knit right now. I want something classic, pretty but not with a lot of detail that isn’t going to show up anyway.
One of the problems . . if you can call it a problem, is that nothing I see measures up to the Dashi Jacket. I loved knitting that pattern and I love how it fits and I want to knit one in every color. This WSK yarn keeps telling me it wants to be another Dashi Jacket but I’m trying to resist that urge.
Here are a few patterns I came across that may work. I think I can knit this at either worsted or DK gauge.
You would think since I can use DK or Worsted, I wouldn’t have any trouble finding a pattern. I think I’m going to keep this yarn in the back of my mind so when I do come across a pattern that will work, I can get right on it but I’m probably overthinking it all at this point.

I think the yarn you swatched above will be perfect for All of the Lights. It reminds me of the one used to show the pattern.

It will be fine, if subtle, but if it wants to be Dashi, let it be, since you like it so much. Go with your heart, not your head. =)

I agree with the above note. This may not be a match but it’s so close. If I could be doing all those cables and lace and had the yarn, I’d be off to the races. Gorgeous sweater with cables in places I didn’t know you could put cables. Malabrigo is the brand yarn that makes me crazy. The colors are gorgeous but often there’s not many skeins available in the shop. The skeins are sometimes not matching even in the shop and the risk is the same even if the shop orders it for you at however many you need. There is not a lot number as you know, what’s dyed is dyed and you virtually have to alternate skeins on everything. But, I still love the multi colorways they come up with, so I’m still buying it.

I think once you get the repeat of the cable in, it is going to show up better than you think.
