Yesterday morning, while still in bed, barely daylight, waiting for Vince to wake up, I grabbed the tablet and started reading Ravelry. There was an early morning post on several groups about discontinued colors for Madelinetosh yarn. Well over 100 colors . . gone! Many of them are amazingly popular colors. There was quite an uproar in the knitting community. After an hour or so, there began to be lists of new yarns that would be replacing the discontinued yarns and everyone seemed to calm down a bit. When Vince woke up, I said “You’re not going to believe this but Madelinetosh is discontinuing Tart! And Antique Lace! And Liquid Gold! And worst of all . . Grasshopper!”
Vince must have noticed the desperation in my eyes and he said “Why don’t you order 6 skeins each of Tart and Grasshopper? That can be your birthday present!” He’s heard me talk about both Tart and Grasshopper for years and years.
It isn’t like I need yarn. We all know that. I have a ton of Madelinetosh yarn. I put the Tart and Grasshopper in my cart. I hesitated and the Tart disappeared . . someone else wanted it and was decisive. Then I told Vince “I’m not ordering it. I don’t need any yarn.”
I believe he was thinking of calling the doctor. Something terrible must be wrong with me but no . . I just don’t need any yarn. I truly want to use what I have and stop adding to the clutter.
So . . no Madelinetosh discontinued yarn is coming to live at our house.

I understand –I tend to WANT things (mostly fabric) and when I talk myself out of impulse buying, I’m kind of proud of myself. I’m trying to declutter and pare down on “owning” things. I have way too much stuff!

I did the same thing recently when I was “needing” fabric for several small projects. I have 12 tubs of fabrics and decided “to shop at home”. You are exactly right ….it was a breath of fresh air not spend money and I was so happy about the decision.

Just think. . . less yarn that you won’t have to figure out the weight of. Or was it the amount of yardage? Sorry, I don’t remember exactly but I know I read a post where you were lamenting the lack of labeling on Madelinetosh yarn.
Good for you for staying strong to the “no buy” impulse.

You showed great restraint!!! If fairy Frost fabric by Michael Miller ever hints at discontinuing any you bet your bippy I will be ordering what they have left. It’s my all time favourite fabric. If anyone has any they’d like to sell, please let me know!

Looks like confessions of a reformed (reforming?) hoarder! Kudos to you.

Oh, waiting for the first sale on the new colors then? LOL

Did you see that the initial discontinued list was incorrect? All the colors you listed have survived the cut but dang you missed the perfect opportunity to have added them to your stash! 😉

I admire your courage!! I don’t know if I could be that brave!!! LOL

Wow. Truly impressive restraint. I had a similar moment of anxiety this week with a fabric line, but I was not as strong as you were. Several dozen yards (and a few hundred dollars!) later, my anxiety is dissipated and my fabric stacks runneth over!

I have used my stash to make the current quilt I’m working, down to the batting. I don’t have a huge stash, but at age 78 I have more than I’ll ever use in this lifetime! I still love to go to my local quilt shop to fondle fabric.
