It’s that time of year. The time when I need to stay out of the feed and farm supply stores.
On our way to Aldi, Vince said “Let’s stop at AgMart and get more chicken feed.” I said “Oh, yes! I’ll run in and look at the baby chicks!” You know where this is going.
Vince got his chicken feed while I looked at the chicks, then I called him over.
These are the ones that lay the colored eggs. Some call them Ameraucanas but I don’t think the true Ameraucana chicks are actually sold in mass markets but I don’t know. AgMart called these chicks “Easter Eggers”, which is what I prefer to call them. Anyway, I said “Can we get some?”
Vince: We’d have to keep them under lights for a while?
Me: That’s ok.
Vince: How are you going to “assimilate” them with the other chicks?
Me: We can keep the rest of the chickens in one side of the coop (it’s divided) keep the small ones in the other side, then the little ones can come out into a pen and they’ll all get used to each other and then we’ll let them all out together. Easy!
Vince: When you’re out of town, I’ll be the one to have to take care of them.
Me: Yes!
In the end . . he said “no more chicks” so we didn’t get any.
I cannot let myself go into the farm supply places til the chicks are gone!

You know I love this post! 🙂 We hatched out 6, then I got the Mosaic rooster that I think isn’t a rooster. And later the same day got 3 Ayan Cimanis. So we have lots of new babies too.

=) Probably a good choice. How many chickens do you still have?

How funny! My father in law did get some of the Ameraucanas back in the early/mid 70’s. They lay the prettiest eggs and the yolks are so yellow they are almost orange. I loved those eggs!
