Yes, I’m crazy. Some day, probably today, I’ll wonder “What were you thinking?” It’s just yarn!
Originally my idea was to do a temperature cowl using the Leftovers Cowl pattern. I love the pattern. It’s easy to follow and very easy to work a few rows at a time. And, I love colorwork. For weeks, I’ve been thinking about how I would do it and then I talked myself out of it and started the Timepiece yesterday.
Last night I kept thinking about it and thinking that I wish I had done the cowl.
The pattern has 13 sections across two charts. Each chart was worked 6 times for a total of 606 rounds. I kept thinking about how to do it and I really couldn’t come up with an easy way to make it work. Six x 13 = 78 “sets” and trying a daily tracker in there would have made a cowl big enough to cover half of Texas.
As far as ESK’s requirement, we only have to have 50 color changes (not use 50 colors but have 50 points where the colors change. Then, this morning Rebecca commented about the temperature quilts she’s making. She’s making two using two different patterns and different fabrics. I thought . . if she can do it . . so can I! So, we can all blame Rebecca for my crazy idea.
Here’s what I came up with:
- I’ll make two entries per week and I’ll skip the week of Thanksgiving, and I’ll end it about December 20 so that’s three weeks I won’t be doing it. July – September, I’ll do only one entry per week. They’re all going to be so close to the same. So, there are 13 weeks with one entry – that’s 13 entries. There are 36 weeks with 2 entries so that’s 72 + 13 = 85 entries. That will end up working Charts A & B 6 times (as the pattern suggests) and then working Chart A one more time. I’m happy with that plan.
- For the weeks I’m doing two entries, one entry will have a dark background and light colorwork and the other entry will be vice versa. The dark background will be the high for that week and the light colorwork will be whatever the low was for that day. The light background will be the low for that week and the colorwork will be whatever the high was for that day.
I know it all sounds way more complicated than it really is. I’ll still make the Timepiece too. I’m not sure which one I’ll submit for the knit along.
I got started last night and almost got finished with the two entries for the first week of January.

Uh-oh…we’re egging, er, encouraging each other on! Are we brave/excited, or are we just foolish?
BTW, when researching, I saw at least one person who did a previous year (maybe her birth year?), so she knew in advance what the extremes would be. But I like the reveal as the year progresses.

Also pretty, but also time consuming!
