A reader had asked where the garlic was in reference to the asparagus so I took some pictures of the garden this morning. It’s a mess now because we’re still pulling out old stuff and it all needs a good cleanup.
We have a 100′ x 100′ area fenced with an 8′ fence to keep the deer out . . though the turkeys fly right over it without any problem.
When you walk through the gate, the garlic/onions are to the far left (northeast corner):
Still standing near the walk through gate, to my right (northwest corner), is where the elderberries are planted.
Just south of the elderberries is where the asparagus is in raised beds and just east of that is where Vince is putting the blackberries and Goji berries.
If you stand almost in the center of the garden and look towards the NE, you see the garlic and Vince’s shop in the background.
Still standing near the middle and looking towards the southeast, that’s where we had the beans last year and you can see the implement shed.
We’re not planting beans at all this year. We have plenty of green beans and we can’t eat most other beans that we like.
Still standing near the middle and looking towards the southwest, you can see the keyhole garden and a pile of cardboard for another one, as well as last year’s tomato stakes.
And then looking to the northwest, it’s the asparagus, blackberries, goji berries and elderberries.
We started out with veggies in the whole 100 x 100 area but we’re adding areas that will not have to be tilled and replanted every year:
- Asparagus
- Artichoke
- Elderberries
- Jerusalem Artichokes
- Goji Berries
- Blackberries
We have lettuce, spinach and kale planted, along with garlic and onions. We’ll plant tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini, okra and eggplant. The garden area won’t be nearly full this year but hopefully it will be manageable.

Seems like a perfect set up! What a wonderful garden & farm! You inspired me to begin a garden last year! I love fresh from the garden & more specifically that I am truly eating organic!

Good to let it go fallow for a year anyway, isn’t it?
