We lost all our mealworms in the extended extreme heat last summer. We ordered 5,000 new ones and they arrived today.
I would bet that between my lost package last week, the number of packages we get and the weird packages we get, we’re the talk of our post office.
Vince cleaned out the old trays and we loaded them up with fresh bedding (chicken feed and oatmeal) and food (apples and celery).
Three trays! These things multiply like crazy. They will be extra protein for the chickens and the bluebirds love them. We have little stainless cups near each bluebird house and we go around a couple of times a week and drop about a dozen worms in each cup.

Very interesting. How long does it take to muliply? Do they eat the apples and celery? You guys are so thoughtful to the birds. 😉

I know my mailperson wonders about me! I order quite a few spring bulbs, and this summer/fall I ordered a couple of bare-root perennials. Of course there is also the yarn/fiber I buy. At Christmas, my uncle sent me a fruit box. I happened to be home when the fruit box was delivered, and the mailman asked me if it was plants. I recognized the box as fruit, and I told him that this one wasn’t. He said he wondered, because he could have sworn some dirt fell out of a package he had delivered earlier in the year. I laughed and told him that one WAS plants…(it was the bare-root perennials). I’m sure they see a little bit of everything!

I’ve been reading up on composting. I saw the pic and thought you were doing the worm composting. Lol

I’ve been buying the dried meal worms for the birds. I was surprised the first time I opened the package – it smelled exactly like peanut butter!! The birds sure love them, though!!

I remember when you were growing your last batch, at the same time I was trying to get RID of pantry moths (which lay eggs that become mealworms). I won that battle (knock wood), but I would gladly have sent you a starter kit! 😉

I never had that many at one time in my classroom, but they do love to multiply in dark closets! I just put a bit of potato in for water, and fed them wheat bran. Happy little fellas!
