I don’t think I’ve written about this before. I took pictures at home but I think I never did a blog post so . . if I did, I’m sorry for posting twice.
Years ago . . like 30 or more years ago, there was this little square plastic gadget thing that sat on the countertop and you put small bags in it and it was like a little countertop trash can. I think you had to buy the bags separately because they fit onto the plastic thing somehow. I’m sure you have no idea what I’m talking about based on this description.
Recently, I came across this hanging trash bag holder.
It fits over a cabinet door or even a drawer. Grocery sacks fit in there. I ordered myself one and have used it so much that I got Nicole one. It’s only about $7. Chad thought it just looked awful and we promised him if someone came over, we’d yank it down and throw it in the cabinet.
Really, I think it’s just so useful. When I was making pizza sauce yesterday, I threw the tomato sauce cans, the tomato paste can, the tomato can, the empty cheese wrapper . . everything went in the little bag and when it was full, I just grabbed it and tossed it in the trash. So much better than walking to the trash can every time I have something to throw away.
I guess it does look kinda trashy (no pun intended!) but it is so useful and it’s so easy to take down and then put back up when you’re cooking . . I love it and thought some of you might like it too.

That is so different than how I do it, I enjoy hearing about differnt methods. I recycle the cans, and the papers, and all food scraps go into the organics bin and get picked up by my trash hauler. Plastiv bags are gathered and recycled at the store, and nothing would go into the garbage aka landfill.

I think it’s a good idea. Whenever I’m cooking I have a trash bowl on the countertop. Every trash thing goes in the bowl. Just one trip to the trash can.

We recycle everything we can. I like to use a garbage bowl on the counter because we have a child-proof lock on the garbage can cabinet (to keep the cats out!).

Nice idea – but we recycle everything we can as well. Plus, plastic shopping bag are going the way of the dodo bird here. It’s bring your own bag or brown paper bag now. Plus, most places charge a fee a plastic bag now. I carry a small reusable bag in my purse now. I have a neat garbage can that has notches on the ends that hold the plastic bag handles – now it’s hard to get the bags.

Yes, I had one of those counter top trash holders! Lost it in a move somewhere, but I thought it was great.

I think that looks like a handy little item to have. It seems like it might be useful in an RV too. I notice that a lot of you recycle, which I think is a wonderful thing! I wish we still had a recycling center in my rural, small town area. Sadly, it closed a couple of years ago so we have no were to go with items that could be recycled.

couldn’t you just turn it around and put it INSIDE the cabinet door. it would be out of sight, but still close by and handy. pretty nifty
Judy Laquidara says
Nope. It sits a bit above the door so the door wouldn’t close. At my house, I use it on a drawer so it for sure wouldn’t work like that but it’s easy to take off, throw the bag away and stick the plastic thing in a drawer.

We recycle as much as we can too. There is a recycling center here that we take stuff to a couple of times a month. It is inconvenient, because it’s on the other side of town, but recycling is important to us, so we do it. We try to use as little plastic as possible.I use reusable grocery bags or ask for paper, which I use doing crafts with my grandkids. I’m always looking for ways to repurpose things to give them new life instead of throwing them out. Drives my husband nuts sometimes. He was skeptical when I got a whole bag of old T-shirts from my daughter-in-law, made yarn out of it and crocheted big baskets to store dog and kid toys. They turned out pretty nice, so he’s a believer now!! ,

Plastic shopping bags have been banned here for a few years already. Wish they would get rid of them everywhere. You either bring your own bags to the store here or you are charged 5 cents for each paper bag you get.

That is a great idea!! I saw something that sits on the counter and holds your zip top or other bags so you can put food in it without using your hands and spilling stuff all over it! I think I would really like that too. My former daughter in law would have loved to have this when she had her chickens and rabbits. She would put food in a plastic bag and take it out to them. What a great idea.

I remember those countertop scrap bags! Just as you described them! Late 60s?

My MIL had the counter top one. This looks quite useful. Do you just use grocery bags, or have to use specialty bags? I don’t think it looks bad. Trash is a fact of life. We all make it every day, and it has to go somewhere. I’d rather it be somewhere convenient!
katie says
That would work for my organic trash, just use the right bag, fill it up and out it goes.

I like it! I use store bags to put what could be stinky stuff (I rinse all my cans) like meat wrapper plastic and bags chicken parts come in to tie up so it won’t smell out loud.
