Vince spent a couple of days this week cutting more trees for the mushroom garden.
You can see the ones with the wax on the ends . . the horizontal ones . . those are the logs that have already been inoculated. The ones piled up at the end are the ones he just cut. They have to sit for three weeks before he can inoculate them. Every time I walk by this spot, I stop and look for any signs of growth. Vince said it takes about 9 months for them to produce and until they’re ready to “bloom”, there won’t be any signs of life. That means July or August before we see growth/harvest mushrooms.
I’m pretty excited about it. I wish it didn’t take so long but I guess everything worth having is worth waiting for, right?
Vince thinks he will only need to cut one more load of logs and that will give him enough to use up most of his plugs. I’ve asked him not to be out cutting trees while I’m gone. When I asked him what would happen if he got hurt while I was away, he used to say “the UPS guy will find me” but now the UPS guy has quit coming down the driveway and just leaves packages at the gate so I guess no one would find him so he needs to not get hurt, ever but especially while I’m away.

My best friend was told by her husband not to clean the kitchen cabinets while he was gone…she climbed up and was cleaning away when she forgot the drop down to the desk…almost fell through the windows but landed on the floor so hard she got a huge pool of blood build on the side of her leg. She didn’t go to the doctor even though it looked bad. When her husband got home, he was not happy with her and made her go to doctor…four visits to drain blood and antibiotics to stop the abscess that had started growing…lesson learned (I hope). Nobody should be doing dangerous things when they are home alone! She is so lucky she didn’t break a bone!

I’m with you on the no cutting while you’re gone rule. There’s just no sense in taking that kind of chance. No one EVER thinks they’re going to have an accident! Vince’s mushroom rows look so neat and tidy on the logs. I should have guessed they would be. =)
